Col de Pavis and Combe de Darbon

Starting from Bernex, this circular is a great classic. Long with a significant elevation gain, the effort required is pleasantly rewarded by the dazzling panoramic views of the Mont Blanc massif, the Dents du Midi and the Bernese Oberland. Herds of ibex are frequently encountered near the Col de Pavis.

Description of the walk

On leaving Bernex towards Pré Richard, park opposite the restaurant "Le relais de la Chevrette".

(S/E) With your back to the restaurant, head to the right, then turn left to join the Route de Charmet. Continue in the same direction until you reach the Route de la Dent d'Osque.

(1) Turn left, then right, staying on the same road.

(2) Keep right at the three-way junction a few dozen metres further on. Cross the bridge over the Ugine and immediately take the wide path on the left along the stream. Continue to the junction near a wooden footbridge.

(3) Take the path on the right, which slopes upwards, and continue along the stream. Pass the start of a ski lift and join a local road. Turn left to cross the Malpasset bridge.

(4) Take the wide path opposite and pass to the right of the small hamlet.

(5) At the fork after the right-hand circular bend, take the path on the right, which quickly turns into a steeply sloping trail.

(6) At the crossroads, turn right and pass by the fountain between a large, beautiful, recently renovated farmhouse and another smaller one. The grassy path is flat until you reach the forest entrance and leads to a three-way fork.

(7) Turn left for a few metres, then immediately right onto a wide, flat path towards the Chalets d'Oche. At the edge of the forest, the path joins a stony, uneven trail. You now have a clear view of the surrounding peaks, including the Dent d'Oche on the left.

(8) Keep left and head towards the farmhouse inn, which is open during the summer. You will particularly enjoy the "Bernex" cheese, a cousin of Abondance and exclusive to the Chalets d'Oche.

(9) Follow the path on the right towards Lac de la Case.

(10) Continue to the right to reach the lake and go around it on the left before reaching a fork where the second lake appears.

(11) Keep to the right and continue climbing to Portes d'Oche. You are now in the foothills of the high mountains.

(12) Continue along the path towards the Col de Pavis. On a clear day, as soon as you set foot in this magnificent valley, you will be struck by the exceptional view of the Mont Blanc massif in the distance to the right and Lake Darbon at your feet.

(13) At the fork, turn left, slightly beyond Col de Pavis, the highest point of our hike,to discover the easternmost tip of Lake Geneva. Hikers and herds of ibex are frequently encountered in this area.

(14) Turn back to the previous fork.

(13) Descend to the left towards Lac de Darbon and the hamlet of the same name.

(15) Go around the lake on the left and climb the path on the right towards Col de la Case d'Oche before reaching the first farms in Darbon.

(16) Turn right and follow the path that leads to Col de la Casse d'Oche via a steep climb.

(17) Follow the ridge path to the left , taking time to enjoy the exceptional 360° view. You will reach a fork before arriving at Pointe de Pelluaz

(18) Turn right towards Chalet Vert and join a wide stony path, which is also a blue ski run in winter, near the water reservoir.

(19) Turn right and stay on this wide path, going around the water reservoir and then the La Combe restaurant. You will reach Pré Richard.

(20) Take the wide track on the right.

(21) Head right, north, towards the car park and La Fétiuère restaurant. Return to the tarmac and follow the winding road.

(22) Turn left onto an unmarked path that leads directly to the Malpasset bridge: if you miss the path, you can stay on the road.

Cross the bridge and immediately turn left onto Route de la Dent d'Oche. Pass by the Maupas cave and its delightful chime, then continue straight ahead to the three-way junction you passed on the way there.

(2) Turn right and follow the same route as on the way there until you reach (S/E).

Notes

Fountains after thefirst climb, shortly before La Tailla, at Les Chalets d'Oche, and at Darbon. Springs in the valley above Darbon.

Refreshments available at Chalets d'Oche, La Combe and Pré Richard.

There are no difficult, exposed or vertiginous sections. No special equipment is required.

Worth a visit

Although the circular is popular, don't hesitate to take the time to stop and enjoy the many panoramic views.

There are often many ibex before the Portes d'Oche and then in the Combe de Darbon.

In late spring and early summer, the flowers are exceptional, with an "avalanche" of orchids and gentians.
