Park in the car park located about 200m to the right after the bridge over the Bléone.
(S/E) Take the signposted path which starts on a steep slope at the far end of the car park. The path, facing due north
climbs quite steeply but steadily until it meets a track.
(1) Continue along the path opposite and you will soon reach the ruins of Chauvet, from where
the path turns westwards.
(2) Turn left. The slope becomes much gentler and there are lovely views over the Bléone valley. Join the track again just before reaching Andy Goldsworthy’s art shelter.
(3) After spending a little time exploring, return to the path towards the Col de l’Escuichière
which overlooks the Bès valley (1242m).
(4) From the pass, head south-west and climb straight up the slope towards the summit (1,326m).
(5) After taking full advantage of the exceptional view, continue south-west along the ridge. There are no further markings and the route is overgrown with broom, but it is not particularly difficult. You will thus reach the Baisse du Frêne (1,238m).
(6) Head south-east along an old track that descends quite steeply, continuing straight on at the few junctions you come to. You’ll rejoin the track near Le Villard.
(7) Turn right to follow the track as it winds its way down and reach the bottom of the valley on the Route du Guéni, near a ruin.
(8) There are just a few hundred metres left to walk on the left before reaching the car park (S/E).
PATOU in the vicinity. It's superb up to the pass. After that, on the ridge, you have to look for the trail in the undergrowth, but it's pretty up to point 6: Baisse du Frêne. Then the descent is tedious on a track, accompanied by the Villard patous, which are apparently not very friendly. I didn't see any in January.
