Park in the square by the church in Sars-Poteries
(S/E). With your back to the church entrance, turn right onto Rue de l’Église. Head left towards the menhir, then right onto Rue Potier. Then turn left and follow the old railway line for a good hundred metres; this has been converted into a walking trail by the Nord Department under the name ‘Voie Verte de l’Avesnois’. You’ll reach a junction with a road (D80).
(1) Turn right onto this road, then right again to head up the path that passes in front of a wayside shrine. You will then walk through the rolling, wooded countryside to Dimont, nestled in the hollow of the valley.
(2) At the tarmac road, turn right, then immediately left. Walk down the road which passes through the village with its traditional houses built of blue stone and brick.
(3) After the bridge, turn left onto the Voie Verte. Follow this path – designed for walking, horse riding and cycle touring – for 4 km, passing once again by the first junction you passed on the way out (D80).
(1) Turn left, heading in the opposite direction to your outward journey, for a good hundred metres. Continue straight ahead to discover another side of Dimont, perched overlooking the ponds. You’ll come to several junctions; cross them carefully.
Pastures give way to fields and soon, in the distance on your right, you’ll spot the village of Lez-Fontaine and, opposite, the leaning bell tower of Solre-le-Château.
(4) When you reach the first houses, leave the Voie Verte and head down the small road on the right, which takes you to the centre of the village of Lez-Fontaine. At the entrance to the village, turn left towards the church: you can admire its rubble-stone façade, featuring an ornate Gothic portal in the form of an ogee arch.
(5) Return to the previous junction and go straight on, then turn slightly left to walk up Rue du Général de Gaulle to the open-air theatre, which you should walk around.
(6) After the open-air theatre, turn right onto Rue de Sars-Poteries.
Carry on straight ahead along this small road until you see Sars-Poteries in the distance.
(7) At the entrance to the village, cross the road and continue straight ahead, veering slightly to the right onto Rue Pasteur.
Walk past the cemetery, then turn right onto Rue Anatole France, which will take you back to the car park where you started (S/E).
