Route du bois de Groez via Libotte

Car park: Grand Place, near Solre-le-Château Town Hall.

(S/E) With your back to Rue des Liesses, take the picturesque Ruelle aux Souris opposite (between the chemist’s and the notary’s office); a wooden sign indicates the name of the route. At the T-junction, turn left. At the end, turn right and follow the Riamé.

(1) At the end of the path, follow the D963 to the left towards Jeumont. At the roundabout, take the^third left, the Chemin de Groez, and walk alongside a sports ground on your left.

(2) At the Carrefour de la Roquette (remarkable view of five typical church spires, from left to right: Epinoy, Clairfayts, Solre-le-Château, Sars-Poteries, Lez-Fontaine), turn slightly right onto the Chemin de Groez. At the next fork, continue straight ahead. Cross the Ecrevisse stream.

(3) Just after the bridge, turn left and enter the Bois de Groez (private property, do not stray from the marked path). At the fork, go right. At the next crossroads, continue straight ahead.

(4) On leaving the woods, continue straight on through the hedgerows. Ignore a path on the left (marker 195) and continue north-west. Pass in front of a wayside shrine and reach the hamlet of Le Warou via Rue du Calvaire.

(5) At the hamlet of Le Warou, turn right then immediately left towards Solrinnes. Ignore a turn-off on the right towards the church, cross the village and continue left onto the D80 , taking care. Note the old Moulin de la Foulerie below on your left. Cross the bridge over the Solre and reach a Y-junction.

(6) Leave the road and turn left onto Chemin de Vendray. After a wooded section, the path winds through fields and pastures, heading south-south-west. At the end, join the D27 at a place called Libotte.

(7) Cross the D27 and take the small road opposite towards Dimont. Continue straight on to the hamlet of Offies. At the T-junction, turn left towards Lez-Fontaine and reach the Chapelle d’Offies.

(8) Continue along the road. At the crossroads in the hamlet of La Rue Haute (calvary), turn right to immediately find the Avesnois Greenway.

(9) Follow the Voie Verte to the left for about 300m.

(10) Just before the sewage treatment plant, turn right onto Rue du Général de Gaulle and head up to the church at Lez-Fontaine (16th century). Walk through the village, passing Rue Léon Peron on your right, then Rue Jeannette. At the next junction, turn left towards the square. Walk past the bandstand.

(11) Turn left onto Rue de la Croix. At the end, make a first turn left then right to join Chemin Vert. Continue straight ahead (east). At the end, continue along the D27 for about 150m.

(12) Join the Voie Verte de l’Avesnois and turn right onto it. At the junction with the D963, carefully follow this road to the left (Avenue du Général de Gaulle) as far as the Notre Dame de Walcourt Chapel. Then follow the Grand Rue to return to the starting point (S/E).

Follow the route description for the main route at the start
At point (2), take the path on the left and then turn right onto the Les Garennes path, which offers a
panoramic view of the Solre valley below. This path becomes a track and, at the end, joins the Chemin Dessous le Veau. Cross the Solre and continue along Les Garennes, then cross the RD 27 and head opposite; at the fork, turn right onto Rue du Gal de Gaulle, where you will have joined the Avesnois Greenway.
