Route of Le Puy and Le Miroir des Fétoules with the orientation table

This is a fairly simple, easy hike offering beautiful views of the Écrins massif and the Vénéon valley around Saint-Christophe-en-Oisans, with the option of an orientation table to help you find your way around.

Description of the walk

Park in one of the car parks on the right as you arrive in Saint-Christophe-en-Oisans, below the cemetery. For your information, you enter these car parks from the upper part and exit from the lower part. Other parking spaces are available at the exit of the village in the direction of La Bérarde.

(S/E) When you leave the car park, walk up along the cemetery wall and, after going around it, cross the road and turn left into the alleyway, Les Roures, towards the hamlet of Le Puy (signpost showing the different routes available).
Pass the few houses via a paved stairway and join the path on the left which descends slightly, still towards Le Puy. Cross the Torrent du Diable on a wooden footbridge opposite the old Moulin du Diable and climb the two hairpin bends towards the Vierge de la Petite Pass.

(1) At the Vierge du small pass, enjoy your first panoramic view of the village of Saint-Christophe (despite the medium-voltage cables!) and the Vénéon valley.
Continue along the main path, which is almost flat, to the hamlet of Le Puy, initially running alongside the medium-voltage power line.

(2) In the hamlet of Le Puy, note the few well-restored houses and a magnificent wash house at the entrance. View of the hamlet of Lanchâtra on the other side of the valley.
15 metres after the wash house, take the path on the right towards the Miroir des Fétoules. The path then begins its slow but steady climb towards this small pond.

(3) The Miroir des Fétoules (shown on few maps) is a simple pond that is likely to dry up in summer. However, if you are lucky enough to find water, clear weather and little wind, you will understand where its name comes from!
Continue along the path to the left for about a hundred metres.

(4) Take the path on the left leading to the orientation table. The climb is continuous. There is a slightly tricky section two-thirds of the way up in some fresh scree. Reach the orientation table.

(5) In perfect condition, this orientation table allows you to name all the surrounding peaks, with a view from Le Râteau to La Muzelle, passing of course by La Tête des Fétoules and the Vénéon valley.
Turn around and descend by the same route to the fork.

(4) Turn onto the path on the left to descend into the Torrent du Diable valley. This path is well marked, almost "paved" in places, and its slope is steady.

(6) When you reach the crossroads near the Torrent du Diable, take the path on the right that leads to Saint-Christophe. After crossing the stream on a wooden footbridge, the path arrives at a small car park and then a tarmac road.

(7) Several paths allow you to cut across the winding road. You just have to find them, as they are rarely signposted!
Once you reach the village, cross the terrace of the Tourist Office via a set of two staircases to reach the main road at the entrance to the cemetery and its car park (S/E).

Waypoints

  1. S/E : km 0 - alt. 1,456 m - Car park below the cemetery.

Notes

There is a tap at the wash house in the hamlet of Le Puy, but there are no signs indicating the quality of the water. There are no other water sources along the rest of the route.

For the less adventurous, the climb to the orientation table is optional. Simply continue straight ahead at point (4) to begin the descent to Torrent du Diable.

There is a possible shelter at point (4) (closed???).

Be sure to bring good shoes, walking sticks, binoculars and, of course, a camera!

Worth a visit

On your return, visit the cemetery of Saint-Christophe-en-Oisans, where great mountaineers who made the Écrins famous are buried, starting with the most famous of them all, Gaspard de la Meije (Pierre Gaspard), whose grave is diagonally opposite the main entrance to the cemetery.

The Pont du Diable (Devil's Bridge) over the Torrent du Diable: there is, of course, the road bridge, which is already impressive, but there is also the old bridge, a little further downstream (the real "Pont du Diable"), which can be reached by a path leading off the Route du Clôt, a few metres after the telephone exchange, on the right.

A very interesting route, with beautiful reflections in the mirror of the fetoules, as we were lucky enough to have sunshine and no wind.
Magnificent dining room with a view of the last glaciers when we are at the orientation table.
Then, on the way back, don't hesitate to stop and visit the legendary café in St Christophe en Oisans, still run by Marie Claude Turc, where you'll find treasures inside.
I would love to return.

Hello! A few comments:
-Before Le Puy, mention the path on the right, which is dangerous and leads to the climbing school, see below.
- At point 4, there is "only" one shepherd's hut in very good condition, the Puy Jatet hut.
- You have to climb up to the orientation table. As someone who knows the Oisans well, I was amazed by the panoramic view offered with minimal effort...
-The return before point 6 should mention the junction with the path that leads to the climbing school on the right.
-Even though the road closures after the Prés car park are no problem, it is a shame that there is NO consistency in the various signs...
A very beautiful hike!

A beautiful hike, without too many difficulties.
The first part leading to the few houses in Le Puy is on a balcony trail that requires a little attention.
There are no vertiginous passages, but it is a little exposed in places.
The climb to the mirror (a small pond at this time of year) is easy.
From there, the climb to the orientation table requires considerable physical effort on a stony path: take care on the way down.
Good exercise and a beautiful day.

The descent back to St Christophe is well marked. If the markings are missing, from the tarmac road, take the first path on the left... and follow it...
However, this circular seems to be quite popular in summer.

A magnificent route with splendid views. The return trip to the orientation table (brand new) is definitely worthwhile. The tricky section two-thirds of the way up to the table has been greatly improved since the hike was first published. The same goes for the return trails that cut across the winding road: they are now all marked with either wooden signs or green arrows on the ground. Well done on this hike!

A pleasant and easy route in a magnificent setting. Partially shaded, ideal for escaping the heatwave in Grenoble. I found a spring flowing from a pipe very close to the Miroir des Fétoules pond. The orientation table is worth a detour.
