Route du père from Vibraye

The village is characterised by the presence of the forest. This enabled its owner, the Marquis de Vibraye, to establish forges on the Braye river in Champrond in the early 17th century, where charcoal from the forest fuelled the furnaces producing pig iron and wrought iron until 1913. The trail partly follows the route taken by the convoys laden with heavy iron bars to the workshop in the hamlet of La Fenderie, on the pond of the same name. At La Bouverie, another vanished hamlet, eight houses provided accommodation for the forges’ carters, whilst charcoal burners and miners lived in makeshift huts. Now silent once more, the forest retains of this past activity only the network of paths. Part of it is now a Natura 2000 site.

Description of the walk

Start at the Place de l’Église.

(S/E) With the square behind you, head right towards Le Mans. Walk past the Post Office, turn left onto Rue Raymond Henri, then continue straight on along Rue des Genêts. At the end of the street, follow the path to the right.

(1) Cross the D1 with care and turn left to cross Beaunoir.

(2) When you reach the road, turn right onto it. Then, turn right to enter the forest via the ravine. Pass in front of the Chapelle Sainte-Anne and continue to the gate.

(3) After the barrier, turn left onto the path shared with the GR®235, marked with red and white signs. Cut across a wide path and continue straight ahead.

(4) Just before the Gué aux Mulets ford, leave the GR® and head left. Walk above the Étang de la Fenderie and join the D1.

(5) Cross it carefully, continue straight ahead for a few dozen metres then take the path on the right: you can also take the 4.3 km alternative route by going straight on. You’ll reach the Ruisseau de la Fenderie: picnic table.

(6) Continue to the left and head up to the hamlet of La Petite Soudinière: you can take the 3.1 km alternative route by turning left.

(7) Otherwise, continue straight on to join the sunken lane. Pass La Hasarderie, continue along the dirt track and come out onto a small road.

(8) Take this on the left and follow it for a few dozen metres, then take the path on the right. Negotiate the right-hand bend and take the path on the left which descends to the Abbey, where you join the D136.

(9) Turn left, then take the path that climbs to the left after the turn-off for Le Goutier and rejoin the road taken earlier.

(10) Follow it to the left and, at the Maison des Ruaux, follow the road to the right towards Les Villeneuves. Pass through the hamlet and reach a four-way junction.

(11) Take the path on the right, pass Belle Vue and rejoin the same road once again.

(12) Ignore this road and immediately take the path on the left. At the bottom of the descent, you’ll come to the junction with the D136. Follow the road to the left with care and continue for about 400 m.

(13) Leave the D136 to the right towards La Boulardière. Before reaching the property, head straight on along the path that runs alongside La Braye, then veers off to the left to reach the D1 roundabout at the entrance to Vibraye.

(14) Turn right to enter the village, take the first path on the right towards the recycling centre, then turn left and follow it. You will come out onto Rue des Sablons; follow it to the right and you will reach the Town Hall square. Then turn left to reach the church square (S/E).
