An unusual walk in Dollon

This route will allow you to discover the villages of Lavaré, Dollon and Semur-en-Vallon. These villages developed in the Middle Ages on land that was often sandy or stony, not particularly suitable for farming before modernisation. The villagers therefore found additional sources of income through textile crafts and the extraction of building materials. Situated away from major transport routes, these villages have retained their vitality despite the rural exodus that affected them following the decline of rural industries and traditional activities. Furthermore, these villages have managed to maintain a vibrant community life, fostering the development of unique events and venues such as the tourist train in Semur-en-Vallon and the Museum of Mechanical Music in Dollon.

Description of the walk

Start at the Dollon stadium car park, Rue de la Piscine.

(S/E) Leave the car park, turn left onto Rue de la Piscine then turn left again onto Rue des Sources. Turn left once more towards the stadium then head towards the playground on the right.

(1) At the bridge, take the stony path on the right, then, at the road, turn left for about 400 m. At the junction, take the path that climbs to the right.

(2) At the junction in the bend, continue along the dirt track opposite which descends towards a small road: you can take a 1.5 km detour by turning left. Otherwise , take Chemin de Villée almost directly opposite, then the dirt track on the left uphill. Return to the tarmac and go straight on towards Les Pâtis.

(3) At the hamlet, turn left then right to reach Les Marconnières. Ignore the dead-end street on the right.

(4) Turn right to follow Chemin de la White Cross. At the road, turn right then keep right at the Becquette three-way junction.

(5) Facing the gate, enter the woods on the left and head straight on until you reach the road.

(6) At the white barrier, cross the road and follow the path opposite until you reach the five-way junction.

(7) Take the second path on the left. Cross the D84 with care, take the path opposite and join the Route de Genetay. Cross the road, take the dirt track opposite and arrive at a crossroads on the edge of La Longuève: you can take a 1.7 km detour by turning left.

(8) Otherwise, turn right, cross the ford and join the D89 at La Creuserie. Follow the D89 to the right and continue to the T-junction opposite Semur-en-Vallon Castle.

(9) Turn left towards Château Gaillard, pass through the hamlet and arrive at the Gros Chêne junction: you can take the alternative route towards Semur-en-Vallon by turning right.

(10) Otherwise, continue straight on. At the edge of the woods, turn left towards La Pichottière and head down to a junction located about a hundred metres past the property.

(11) Head right towards Guetteloup. Reach the T-junction with the Route de Saint-Calais, turn left and carry on straight ahead until you reach the D302, which you’ll come to at the Lavaré cemetery.

(12) Turn right and walk carefully along the main road, past the silos, and continue to the tennis courts. Cross over to enter the leisure centre, cross the bridge over the Tortaigne and go round the lake to the open-air theatre. Then turn right and follow the path that runs alongside the stream, crossing it twice before reaching Saint-Pierre Church.

(13) Turn right, then right again to pass in front of the town hall, then turn left onto the D85 bis towards Luart. Continue straight on until you reach the Croix Marguerite.

(14) Turn left, running alongside the quarry, and continue straight on through the Bois de la Blotière until you reach the railway line, which you follow for about 300 m.

(15) Turn right to go under the railway line, reach a junction and turn left. At the T-junction, turn left towards the railway line.

(16) Go under the railway line again, turn right at the X-junction onto the old railway line, and cross the bridge over the Longuève. Pass the sewage treatment plant and continue to the roundabout on the D85, which is called Rue de la Gare here.

(17) Turn left until you reach the junction with Grande Rue.

(18) Head left, pass in front of Saint-Médard Church, then turn left again onto Rue de la Piscine to reach the stadium car park (S/E).
