Circuit des Noirs Étangs

Starting at the Étang Noir and its lookout point, the trail leads from pond to pond, skirting a peat bog and crossing a pond on a wooden bridge leading to a chalet, making for a shady and very easy walk. As a bonus, there are lovely views of the Vosges mountains and the Thillot valley.

Description of the walk

Access: from Le Thillot, follow the D486 towards Château Lambert. At Col des Croix, turn right onto the D57 as far as Étang Noir.
From Rupt-sur-Moselle, take the D35 to the Col du Mont de Fourche, then left onto the D57 to the Étang Noir. There is a small car park next to the Étang Noir and a picnic area.

Blue Ring signposting

(S/E) Join the Étang Noir and continue to the left of it towards the lookout point.

(1) From the lookout, the path runs alongside the Étang Noir, then veers left to reach the road. Turn left for around 30 metres, then take the path to the right through the forest, always following the signs. Further on, cross a small bridge and continue on this path for about 300 m. Cross the road again to take the path opposite (signposted Anneau Bleu) as far as the crossroads after a hundred metres.

(2) Turn right, still following the same signs. You will pass a place called les Noirs Étangs, the name of which is indicated on a sign at the side of the footpath. At the crossroads, turn right again towards "Sentier des Étangs". Walk along the dry pond and then reach the junction with a wide track.

(3) Cross this gravelled path (do not turn right to join the tarmac road). Continue straight ahead on a small, inconspicuous path that winds through the broom, then runs alongside a private pond and house on the left, whose grounds are fenced off. After this private pond, you come to the Étang de la Chaussée Pingant. Turn right onto the path and then left over the bridge to a pretty cottage. See "During the walk or nearby".

(4) Turn right behind the chalet, follow the sign "Sentier des Étangs" and walk along the peat bog. Continue along the path, following the "Recommended direction" sign. Find another pond to the right of the chalet. Walk alongside it, still following the same signs. Reach another pond (large house) called "Étang de la Peau", turn right and walk alongside this pond. When you reach the large house on your right overlooking the pond, continue for about fifty metres until you come to a crossroads.

(5) Turn sharp left to quickly reach the last pond, l'Étang de Plancherotte, and start downhill. You will soon come to a fork in the road.

(6) Continue left downhill along the Pré Martin and, further on, turn left to join the GR®5F. The path passes the Ruisseau de l'État and then heads north and north-east before joining a wide track.

(7) Follow it straight ahead to join the Chemin du Hêtray: on the right is the Auberge du Grammont for a possible break .

(8) Turn left onto this wide Chemin du Hétray, which runs alongside Rue du Grammont, the access road to the inn. Ignore the left-hand path and continue for 800 m, bearing right to find the start of a path that bends to the left.

(9) Take this charming little path on the mountainside on the left. It crosses a wooden footbridge at the picturesque site of the Cascade du Noir Étang, before reaching the Étang Noir and the car park a little further up (S/E).

A lovely walk in the sunshine with a group of 19 people. No difficulties, lovely ponds and pleasant paths with soft ground that's easy on the joints!
I highly recommend it!

Mind you, parking at the start is a hassle. Luckily for us, the owner of the Auberge de la Ferme du Grammont was on holiday. We used his car park, which is reserved exclusively for Auberge guests. As we were told, it is possible to park further up the hill, but only a maximum of 2 spaces are available. As for the rest, it was a very pleasant walk.

Superb walk, but unfortunately abruptly interrupted, and parking impossible next to the hike, because >>>

OWNER OF THE AUBERGE EXÉCRABLE (Auberge du Grammont): my mother and I went hiking right next to his establishment. Impossible to access the walk without a vehicle.

OR: the only car park available was the one reserved for his customers, but it was closed. So we parked inside a field (not in the middle, but to one side). There was also a tractor and a van there, so at first sight it didn't seem totally incongruous...

But we readily admitted our mistake to the owner of the hostel, who came to pick us up on our way, only to yell at us to move. It was impossible to argue, impossible to apologise, he just wouldn't listen. The more my mother kowtowed to him, the more he went on, calling us names. He also tried to give us lessons in 'respect', that we were on HIS property etc... I asked him if it was respectful to address a 75-year-old woman like that. His reply: "I don't give a fuck". I have to admit that I found it hard to keep my cool in front of such a raving lunatic...

OK, my mother and I made an error of judgement, but his reaction was completely disproportionate. What's more, if he wants the "stupid tourists" to come and have a drink (to use his phrase), he has to leave the customer car park open, otherwise everyone will think the hostel is closed.

PROPOSED SOLUTION: that Monsieur L'Aubergiste ask the commune to buy a piece of land from him to create a public car park, accessible to walkers who don't plan to stop at his place.

PS: I'd like to make it clear that I never write comments, EXCEPT positive ones (if I've been asked to do so beforehand, just to support the business with a nice little note). Because even when I'm not satisfied, I don't mention it: it's not my thing to tear down people's work in anonymous writing. But as they say: enough is enough, and congratulations to Monsieur L'Aubergiste for managing to make me angry, and for making my mother cry.

A magnificent circuit where, in frosty weather, you can admire a magnificent waterfall transformed into ice.
In this weather, the black pond was white... because of the ice and frost on it.
A route with beautiful views and no great difficulty
Itinerary with the possibility of stopping off at an inn (it's best to book in advance)
