Description of the walk

Park on Place Henri IV

(S/E) Starting from Place Henri IV, head south-east towards Rue de la Fosse Poirier. Turn right and continue along Route de Varennes until you reach the junction with Rue de Morannes.

(1) Turn left onto the small tarmac road alongside the house with the white gates; this is Rue des Écholiers. Follow this road to the end, then continue along the path that extends from it. Follow the path. When you reach the first T-junction, continue straight ahead to reach a small tarmac road at a bend.

(2) Turn right onto the small road and head towards the hamlet of La Poissonnière. Leave the buildings on your left and take the path leading straight ahead. Follow this path; after passing a small pond, you’ll reach a junction with another path.

(3) Take the path on the right, then keep right at the next junction. Continue straight on along this path, which leads to a small tarmac road at the hamlet of Les Beaudières. Continue straight on again until you reach a junction with another small road.

(4) You will see a path ahead: please note, it is not fully shown on the map. Take this path and follow it alongside the Baraize stream. You will come to a three-way junction.

(5) Turn right and join the small tarmac road (D14) at the hamlet of Les Barbottières. Turn right, go a few metres, then turn left onto the path opposite the house named: Aux Lilas des Barbottières. Walk a few hundred metres, then at the three-way junction by a small pond (on the left), take the right-hand path. Follow the path then turn left along the edge of the woods: Please note, this section of the path is not shown on the map. Walk along the edge of the woods; at the end of the field, you will come to another small path.

(6) Turn left onto this path, which leads to the hamlet of La Guimplerie. Continue straight on along the road until you reach a junction with another small tarmac road.

(7) Turn right and head towards the small bridge over the Baraize stream.

(8) After about a hundred metres, turn right onto a grassy path. At the next junction (marker 28), turn left. At the fork, turn right and head towards the hamlet of Village des Mottes.

(9) Take the tarmac road to leave Village des Mottes and, at the junction, turn left. You will reach the hamlet of La Maison Rouge; the road takes a 90° bend to the right and joins a grassy path lined with trees.

(10) Take this path to the left and follow it all the way to the hamlet known as La Croix Moisie and the junction with the D27.

(11) Cross the D27 and follow it to the right (take great care, as it is a busy road with fast-moving traffic). After about 250 m, take a small road on the left. Continue straight on until you reach a T-junction.

(12) Then turn right. After about a hundred metres, at a fork, take the path on the right. Continue straight on to reach the village and find the church via Rue de la Roche.

(13) At the church, turn left then take Rue des Halles, turn right, cross the market halls, then turn right a few metres further on a small footpath. Follow it all the way to the end to come out onto Rue des Jardins. Turn left then take the first right to reach Grande Rue. Turn left again then immediately right to reach Place Henri IV (S/E)

A very pleasant route, well maintained, with mostly shaded paths and lovely countryside, and as a bonus, a visit to the beautiful St Denis d'Anjou. The signposting is a bit sparse in places, but you can find your way using the route description.

The paths are relatively wide and have been mowed or cleared of undergrowth, which is very welcome in June. There are no particular tourist attractions along the route, but the countryside scenery is varied. An enjoyable walk overall. Towards the very end of the route, there’s a pleasant detour past the vineyards above the ponds. Finally, the village offers a stroll through pretty narrow streets lined with beautiful houses, evoking a bygone era.

A hike enjoyed in sunny weather. Well worth repeating, as it was very popular with today’s hikers. Few roads and pleasant paths.

Just a quick note: as you leave St Denis, make sure you keep to the right at the retention basins and take the bridge to cross the stream. That’s the only thing to mention; otherwise, it was great – we really enjoyed the walk and will be doing it again in the spring.
Thank you for this lovely suggestion!

A very pretty little village. We also really liked the hamlet of La Motte, with its lovely houses and plenty of trees.

In the description to be amended:
(S/E) Take Rue des Halles to reach the medieval market halls, turn right (not left) to cross them, then turn right (not left) a few metres further on, onto a small footpath: "Rue du Puits Morin"
...............
