Monts et Vallées circuit in Pencran

With its rich church and parish enclosure, Pencran stretches across the hill south of Landerneau and then plunges down into green rural valleys. The first part of this trail leaves the village and passes through residential neighbourhoods facing Landerneau. It then joins the countryside, following paths through the woods and farm tracks. In addition to the parish enclosure, you will discover the bucolic atmosphere of a tree-lined canalised stream and the surprising Fontaine de la Vierge (Virgin's Fountain), set in a small, well-preserved sanctuary.

Park in the car park on the church square. The trail starts from this same square.

(S/E) Start by exploring the parish enclosure of Notre-Dame Church. Cross the village to reach Kernevez on your left.

(1) Then go down to the left along a stony path. The path runs alongside the districts of Kermaria and Rosquelen before reaching a pleasant section in the woods. Continue straight ahead, then turn right until you reach a roundabout.

(2) Go down to the left, then turn left onto a path. Follow it straight ahead. At the roundabout, take the second exit on the left and immediately turn right. Along the way, you can enjoy a view of Landerneau across the fields. Then head towards Keranhoatzella.

(3) Turn right, then left onto Rue des Chataigniers. Then turn right three times and follow the road to Keranhoat. This section is very steep.

(4) Go straight ahead, then take the second left and then right until you reach Keroullé.

(5) Take care when crossing the Keroullé road. Continue along the Kerbalanec road and turn right onto a path through the woods towards Runhaer. You will come to a fork.

(6) Turn right towards Runaher. Go up the path on the right at the end of the lane.

(7) Continue and cross the road. Then, at each intersection, continue along the stream. As you walk along the Morbic stream, enjoy the sound of the water, the birdsong and the green colours of nature. Walk to the Virgin Mary Fountain. Built inthe 19thcentury, it consists of a chapel, a basin, a wash house and a drinking trough. Then continue left through the undergrowth to the Croix Neuve.

(8) Then turn right, then left. Continue straight ahead until you reach the Croix Neuve.

(9) Turn right onto the old Saint-Urbain road. Watch out for traffic. Turn right onto a country lane to reach Québou.

(10) Turn left onto the Keravel road. Follow this local road to reach the village. On the way, take a look at the Pencran water tower before returning to the starting point (S/E).

Worth a visit

(S/E) Pencran parish enclosure:recently renovated, the church lights up the village and reveals the different colours of the stone. As you enter the enclosure, the first thing that catches your eye is the south porch, made of Kersanton or kersantite stone. Remarkable for its design and decoration, it houses the 12 apostles in their flamboyant niches. The bell tower contains one of the oldest bells in Finistère. Inside, don't miss the centrepiece, the Descent from the Cross dating from 1517, and the fanciful sandboxes combining human and animal faces.
