Route of the two mills around Saint-Cirgues

Follow the paths through the hills of Saint-Cirgues to discover the remains of the water mills along the Veyre (on the border between Lot and Cantal). Throughout the hike, you will find signs highlighting the vernacular architecture of the Ségali region. Although mainly through forest, the walk still offers beautiful panoramic views of Aveyron and Cantal.

Description of the walk

Park at Place du 19 Mars 1962 in Saint-Cirgues (46210).

(S/E) With your back to the church, take the path to the left of the town hall that runs alongside a low wall, turn left into a copse and join a road.

(1) Turn right, continue along the Route de Maurs (D29) and arrive at the Pont de la Garinie bridge.

(2) Leave the road, turn left, go behind a property and you will find the signpost.

(3) Cross the cow field, taking care to close the electric fences behind you. Be very careful if there are calves with the cows. Continue past the hamlet of Peyratel, cross a road and follow the access road to La Brauge opposite.

(4) Continue along the path opposite and head towards the river, the Veyre.

(5) On your right, go down to see the Moulin de la Galtayrie and learn about the history of water mills from the information panel. Do not cross the bridge (private property). Retrace your steps to find the path and continue to the right until you reach the fork

(6) On your right, go down to the Moulin du Puech (3 mins) and see an old watermill millstone leaning against the private property.

(7) Turn around and return to the previous fork.

(6) Turn right, continue the walk and follow Rue des Moulins to the hamlet of Cavanié.

(8) On the right, take a detour to see a typical Haut-Ségala house. This is private property, so do not enter. There is a risk of collapse. Cross the hamlet and you will come out on Route des Monts.

(9) Turn left and follow this road downhill to the hamlet of Viala.

(10) Turn right onto Route du Viala, ignore the dead end on the right and continue for 100 metres. The road turns into a dirt track lined with a hedge; continue until you reach a road.

(11) Turn right and then immediately left onto the D29 to return to the town centre (S/E).

Trip taken on 20/11/2025. The route is well signposted, but it would be a good idea to put up signs at the start of the route towards the town hall and add a few more paint markings along the way. Of course, the GPS ensured we stayed on track.
The hike is beautiful, with leaves strewn across the forest floor, so be careful not to slip.
The mills are very interesting and in good condition but no longer "turn". The landscapes stretching as far as the eye can see are sublime.
