Route from Goudet via Camp d'Antoune

Goudet is a crossing point on the Stevenson Trail (GR®70), which intersects with theGR®40, which we took for our departure.
Two notable points of interest: the Moulin du Rocher mill and its organ pipes, and the Camp d'Antoune with its bird's eye view of the Loire.

Description of the walk

Departure from the small car park below the church in Goudet.

(S/E) From the small car park below the church, walk up to the church square, then take the street on the right towards Issarlès.

(1) After 100 metres, turn left onto theGR®40and climb steadily through the broom, with a view back over Goudet and its glazed-roof bell tower.

(2) After a kilometre of climbing, take the path on the left and then on the right to the entrance to the village of Fugères, where you leave theGR® and take the D371 on the right.

(3) After 500 metres, continue on thePR® which descends to the right to the Moulin du Rocher.

(4) The mill, now a beautifully restored second home, has a bench and a fountain, ideal for a picnic, with a view of the twisted basalt columns. Take the partially paved path uphill for 500 metres.

(5) Leave thePR® at the mill by climbing up to the right. This is where a section begins that avoids the D500 but is a little off the beaten track for about a hundred metres!
At the end of the climb, join a small road that leads to the hamlet of Auteyrac on the right. Then turn left behind the first houses, heading south.

(6) Turn left, heading south. When the path curves eastwards, head south again on the path that branches off to the right until you reach a clearing.

(7) Be careful in this clearing, leave the path to the west and find the small path at the top of the clearing, heading south. It is very narrow with a few branches obstructing it slightly: pruning shears may be useful! After 200m, it disappears near a small valley. From there, continue across the field above, to the left, and follow the fences to the path: this is a slightly unclear section where you need to keep heading south!

(8) Phew! Once you reach the path, turn left and walk 600 metres to the crossroads where you will find a sign explaining the Camp d'Autoune route. Turn right to get there.

(9) Arrive at the junction of the Camp d'Antoune circular route. Take it in reverse to follow the section overlooking the Loire: first turn right then left for 30 metres. Be careful not to go too far down the road that descends to Salette.
Follow this very pleasant section for about 2 km, with views of the Loire and the Château d'Arlempdes in the distance.

(10) Once again, there is a sign describing the site. Take the stony path north-west for 1 km - a little monotonous - to elevation 986, where it makes a sharp left turn. This is where you finally leave it to take a less marked path on the right,GR®3F.

(11) ThisGR® leads to the village down a path that has been badly damaged by the heavy storms of recent days and will certainly not be repaired any time soon, but it is still passable with good footwear.
At the cemetery, follow the road to the right and turn right again a little further on.

(1) Turn left and then left again to return to the car park below the church (S/E).

A beautiful hike, but between 7 and 8 you need to be careful because you have to go under fences. A map or GPS will come in handy.

Beautiful hike with stunning views of the Loire Gorges and volcanic plateaus. Very informative with information panels at Camp d'Antoune.

A beautiful walk with a variety of viewpoints and very interesting trails.
The climb at the start is tough, with a 270m elevation gain over 1.5km!
Be careful between 7 and 8, as it's very easy to lose the trail, which is almost completely covered in thorny bushes! A jacket and trousers are recommended. I even had to squeeze under a few barbed wire fences to find the trail again, but it was nothing impossible.
All in all, a great hike, shorter than advertised (finished in 3 hours 45 minutes with a 30-minute lunch break).

A lovely hike with beautiful panoramic views, but best avoided in hot weather as much of the route is in direct sunlight. At point 6, we chose to turn off onto the D500 to avoid the problematic sections. The last part is still very rugged but passable with good footwear.

The section between 7 and 8 is very rough (if I may use that expression). It would be better to turn left before 7 and return to the route via the D500 and the PR to avoid ending up in the undergrowth that litters the path and makes it impassable.

Magnificent walk. What a view of Goudet Castle and the plateau after the initial climb (2), but GPS is necessary on the plateau, especially between 6 and 8; you have to go under fences and walk among the horses.

Thank you for this itinerary, which allows us to discover a rich variety of landscapes and monuments.
At 1, the climb is indeed steep. Don't hesitate to take breaks and turn around to enjoy the view of Goudet and its superb bell tower and the Château d'Arlempdes.
At point 7, near the clearing, things must have changed. There is nowhere to make a path, even with pruning shears. You have to climb over the fence at the top of the clearing and continue across the meadows, heading south. The GPX track is a great help for this section.
Finally, the path at 11 is still extremely rutted and unpleasant.
