Route de découverte de Thann

Thann is the starting point of the Wine Route. It is therefore a very large wine-growing region. Its history is closely linked to this industry. Situated at the entrance to the Thur Valley, this route allows you to visit the town, which is well worth a stop. Among the monuments you’ll encounter are the Saint-Thiébaut Collegiate Church and the Witches’ Tower. There are several squares and parks, such as Parc Albert1er and Place de Lattre de Tassigny... There is every reason, therefore, to stop off in this town before heading for Lorraine or Alsace.

Description of the walk

Start the walk at the Centre car park, opposite the railway line and Rue du Général de Gaulle.

(S/E) From the car park, with the railway line on your right, follow the pedestrian crossing on the left and head up Rue des Martyrs. At the roundabout, take the left-hand exit. Walk past the cross on Rue du Steinby and continue straight ahead to Parc Albert1er.

(1) At the park entrance, enter the park and head straight on to the right, going round the bandstand and past the bust of Senator Scheurer Kestner. First turn left then right and exit the park on the right. At the exit, turn right to see the sub-prefecture building.

(2) Return to the park exit and continue straight on to the roundabout. Take the right-hand exit onto Avenue Pasteur and walk past the Church of Pius X. Continue along this street until the second junction after the sports grounds on the left. This street leads to Place du Maréchal Leclerc.

(3) Go round the square on the right and take the second street on the right (Rue du Commando de Cluny). Take the first right to follow Rue Victor Schmidt. At the first junction, head down Avenue de Gubbio to the left. Follow Rue du Lieutenant Henri Tourneux to the right. Then take a small passageway on the left, which may be blocked (if so, stay along the street). When you reach the central square, turn left to rejoin the street further on. First turn right then left towards Place du Sundgau and its playground. When you reach the square, walk along its left-hand side and take a small passage opposite, which leads to Place de la5e Division Blindée.

(4) Cross the square, keeping the Jewish cemetery on your right. Once on the other side, head up the street on the left until you reach the junction. Then turn right onto Rue Jean Flory. Continue straight on until you reach the roundabout.

(5) Take the right-hand exit. Take the first left, then keep right onto Rue de la Poste. Go round the back of the Match supermarket and you will then arrive on Rue du Général de Gaulle, opposite Thann station.

(6) Go down the street to the right and continue along the first street on the left, Rue Gay Lussac. Cross the level crossing and immediately turn left onto Rue Henri Lebert. Pass the cemetery on your left. Continue round the corner to the left. Then cross Rue du Général de Gaulle and continue along Rue du 7 Août. When you reach Boulevard Augustre Scheurer Kestner and the railway line, turn right. Repeat this at the next junction until you reach the rear of the town hall.

(7) Go round the back of the town hall on the left, so as to pass between the building and the collegiate church. Once past this area, first turn right then left to take a cul-de-sac. Pass under a block of flats to reach Rue Anatole Jacquot. Then turn left onto Rue du Rangen to walk past the Tour des Sorcières and then over the bridge spanning the Thur. Pass a monument on your left. When you reach the end of Rue du Rangen, turn right to see the Foyer Saint-Joseph chapel.

(8) Turn back. At the junction, continue right onto Rue Marsilly. Pass a square on your left and continue along the street. Near a small car park on the right, you’ll find a piece of art. With this on your right, take the bridge on the left, cross the river again and arrive at the Fontaine des Vignerons. Take the first street immediately after the fountain: Rue des Généraux Ihler. Follow the street to the temple.

(9) Opposite the temple, take the street on the left. First turn right then left to join Rue Curiale. Take the first right, Rue de l’Étang, to pass in front of the synagogue.

(10) Continue along the street. At the junction before the bend, turn left to take a small path between the houses. When you reach Rue des Remparts, turn left to reach a tower of the old fortifications.

(11) Turn back. At the car park, continue left and head up Rue Saint-Jacques on the left. Take the first street on the right, Rue Scheidecker. At the bend, cross over to the Thur opposite. Continue to the right and cross the footbridge. At the footbridge, turn right onto Rue des Engagés Volontaires. When you reach Rue Saint-Jacques again, turn sharply left to reach Place du Maréchal De Lattre de Tassigny.

(12) Cross the square completely and, at the far end, take Rue de la1ère Armée, until you reach the Collégiale Saint-Thiébaut.

(13) Follow the street of the same name to the left and take the first street on the right, Rue de la Halle. Walk past the former home of Administrator Kloetzlin d’Altenach to reach the collegiate church at the end of the street. Turn right to reach the junction from the outward journey.

(13) Walk round the collegiate church, keeping to the left and passing between the town hall and the church once more. When you reach Rue du Général de Gaulle, follow it to the right, passing a monument, and you will come to the railway line. Cross the road and you will find the car park on the right (S/E).
