Cemetery and Cave of the Waldensians

Based on the route already suggested on Visorando, the Cimetière des Vaudois, I suggest a route that allows you to discover, after the cemetery, the Grotte des Fazys, where some of these Waldensians were smoked out during the 14th and 15th centuries. This is followed by a detour through some of the charming neighbourhoods that make up the village of Freissinières, an educational route (arboretum) and finally a return via the Bois de Monsieur, along the Torrent de la Biaysse.

Description of the walk

Park at the Allouviers car park, located on the right shortly after the dam on the Biaysse.

(S/E) Ford the small stream and go up the wide path on the left.

(1) Leave this path and take the trail on the right towards Col de l'Aiguille. Follow two hairpin bends and you will soon reach a trail junction.

(2) Keep to the right on the ascending path, follow two more hairpin bends and you will reach a crossroads.

(3)Continue straight ahead to reach Les Cèdres, where you can enjoy a beautiful view. Continue in the same direction and you will reach the Cimetière des Vaudois, of which only a wooden sign remains.

(4) Continue for a good hundred metres to reach a crossroads under the climbing rock.

(5) Turn right towards the via ferrata and continue along the path overlooking Fressinière.

(6) Start a steep climb to the right towards the Grotte des Vaudois and reach it: this is the only part of the route that requires careful attention.

(7) Descend via the same path, continuing to take care, and turn right onto the original trail towards Les Hodourenqs. Join a stretch of tarmac road just before Torrent des Jaimes and turn right.

(8) Leave the road and follow the path on the left called Rue du Calvaire. You will soon reach Rue de Malafouasse, where it crosses the GR®541. Turn left and continue for about 20 metres.

(9) Leave the street and follow the GR® trail downhill to the left towards Les Hodouls. You will come out onto Route des Durandons; follow it downhill to the right.

(10) Take the path on the left, rejoin the road and follow it to the left until you reach the first junction.

(11) Take the road on the right for about thirty metres before finding, on the left, a path leading down to the centre of the village of Fressinières. At the school, turn right onto Rue du Framer and follow it to the Tilleuls car park.

(12) On the left-hand side of the car park, you will find the start of the Jardin d'Alfred discovery trail. This trail bends to the left and runs alongside the Biaysse river.

(13) At Riou des Aujards, turn right towards the Biaysse, crossing a small car park. Cross the river at the next bridge and turn left to follow the Bois de Monsieur trail on the right bank. Continue along the river, passing the Pavis bridge on your left and continuing to the next one.

(14) Cross the bridge, take the D38b on the right for a few dozen metres, then find a path on the left that leads back to the wide path you took at the start.

(1) Turn right to follow it in the opposite direction and return to the Allouviers car park (S/E).

Notes

There are several fountains in the village of Freissinières.

(6) Please note that access to the cave (7) can be difficult for those prone to vertigo, but the tricky sections are equipped with metal steps. There are numerous handholds on solid rock.

A pleasant, informative route. Personally, I didn't go up to the cave (due to knee problems), but the walk through Alfred's garden was lovely. I recommend this route.
