Cime del Lausfer and Cima Tesina loop

This magnificent French-Italian hike allows you to discover the middle and upper reaches of the Mercantour: pastures, ungulates, lakes and panoramic views. This hike has a significant elevation gain and includes an exposed section between the Pas du Bœuf and the Col de la Guercha: not recommended for anyone who is afraid of heights or unsure-footed in the mountains.

Description of the walk

To reach the starting point, first head for the village of Isola in the Tinée Valley. From there, take the M97 towards Isola 2000. Follow the road for about 4.5 km. After a hairpin bend to the left and before a small bridge over a stream, park in the car park on the right-hand side of the road.

(S/E) Go back down the road for about 100 metres, then cross it to reach marker no. 60.

(1) Follow the signs for Lac and Col Lausfer and climb the track which, after several bends, leads to marker no. 61.

(2) Follow the path on the right and walk along a stream on your right.

(3) Cross the stream (cairn on the other bank) and climb up the Lausfer valley through relatively dense vegetation. The path leaves the stream and heads east-northeast, then northeast. Further on, in a more rocky landscape, follow a series of switchbacks to reach a junction.

(4) Take the path on the right and ignore the one on the left, which leads to the Saboulé hut. Follow several steep switchbacks to reach the Lower Lausfer Lakes.

(5) Pass between the first two lakes and leave the third on your right to quickly reach a new intersection.

(6) Then turn right. Climb south-east and ignore all the paths on the right until you reach the Col du Lausfer (marker no. 65a).

(7) Turn left and follow the ridge line north. Climb up to the Cime du Lausfer. The view is breathtaking: on the Italian side to the east, you can see the lakes of Saint Anne and the entire Argentera massif, to the north, Mount Viso, and to the west, the Lausfer lakes and Mount Mounier.

(8) Return to the Col du Lausfer by descending the ridge.

(7) Turn right and follow the same route you took on the way up until you reach the intersection.

(6) Continue straight ahead (northwest) and descend gently to Lac Lausfer Supérieur.

(9) Walk along the lake on your right. Climb a few switchbacks and continue climbing north-west to reach the Col du Saboulé (marker no. 64).

(10) Descend via the path on the right towards the Lacs de Sainte-Anne. Immediately below, turn right and descend east-northeast, then northeast. This will take you to the Passo di Tesina.

(11) Climb a path in the extension (north-east), with the Lacs de Sainte-Anne below on the right. You will arrive at the summit of Cima Tesina. Enjoy the view of Mont Malinvern, Cime de la Lombarde and Cime du Gélas to the south-east.

(12) Descend to Passo di Tesina via the same path.

(11) Then turn right (northwest) and descend through lush green countryside. After a wide left turn, cross a stream. Continue descending until you reach a bridge over a torrent.

(13) Cross the bridge and turn left. Climb up along the torrent, following cairns. Reach a crossroads.

(14) Turn slightly left and continue climbing, following a few hairpin bends. The cairns are not always visible due to tall grass; it is important to keep the stream on your left (never cross it). You will arrive at Lago Gorgia: opposite you is the Tête Rougnousse de la Guercha and, on your left, the Roche du Saboulé.

(15) Continue climbing south-west.

(16) Leave a small lake on your right and continue climbing, heading south then south-west. You will arrive at marker no. 336.

(17) Turn right to quickly reach the Pas du Bœuf (Passo del Bue).

(18) Descend on the other side. The path is very narrow and runs along the side of cliffs. It is equipped with chains. Then descend via switchbacks to an intersection.

(19) Turn left and climb up to quickly reach the Col de la Guercha (marker no. 63).

(20) Descend on the other side (south-east). Descend the valley towards a clearly visible hut (a few yellow markings).

(21) Pass the hut and continue downhill, keeping the Torrent de la Guercha on your right. You will come back to marker no. 61, which you passed at the start of the hike.

(2) Turn right and follow the same path you took on the way up to find marker no. 60.

(1) Cross the road and follow it to the left until you reach the car park (S/E).
