Chester-le-Street to Beamish - Durham Round Trail

This 3rd section of the Durham Round Trail walk, begins with an urban walk through the outskirts of Chester-le-Street before picking up the C2C cycle route making the walking easy going, however the entire route is uphill alll the way from Chester-le-Street to Beamish. Look out for sculptures along the way which relate to the industrial past as well as legend.

Description

Start : Market Place (DH3 3TF), Grid ref. NZ 274 516

(S/E) From the Market Place, head North on Front Street away from the town centre. Continue onto Newcastle Road for approximately 1 Km until you reach a large roundabout.

(1) Turn left (West) at the roundabout, cross the road, and walk up the A693 (West) for 500m, you will cross the railway lines. To your right will be a layby. Continue walking until you reach the end of the layby.

(2) Cross the road with care and look for a path at the end of the layby. Take this path South-West. Take one of the paths which connect this track with the C2C cycle path. On your right will be the Andy Goldsworthy sculpture of the Lambton Worm. The C2C cycle path runs past this sculpture.

(3) Pass under Pelton Lane. If you have missed the cycle path and arrived on Pelton Lane, cross the road and take the right path at the otherside to the cycle path.

(4) Continue following the C2C cycle path for around 1.2 Km, until you reach the King Coal sculpture by David Kemp. This is a good place to take a breather. Rejoin the route and continue to follow the cycle route for around 1.1 Km as it turns North-West.

(5) The cycle path will pass over the top of Front Street in Pelton and then under the A693. The route crosses 2 more bridges over Baytree Terrace and Stony Lane.

(6) After passing Stony Lane the cycle path reaches the treeline and turns West.

(7) After 1 Km you will see a junction in the path, you may even glimpse the Beamish Cows sculpture ahead, bear right and follow the path to the Eden Picnic Area (E).
