Description of the walk

The car park for the start of this walk is located in front of the church.

(S/E) In front of the electric vehicle charging point, with the church on your right, head down the Grand’Rue, pass the church gate and turn left towards the town hall. Walk up this street, leaving the Rue de la Messe on your left. After passing the last houses, take the path on the right for about 150m. At the junction, head down to the left. Follow the edge of the woods to reach some farm buildings.

(1) Go straight on until you reach the first junction. Turn left and, at the next crossroads, keep left.

(2) Cross the D85 (Rue des Bourguignons) with care. Ignore the first path on the right just after crossing the Ruisseau Saint-Bonnet, then head uphill to reach a crossroads.

(3) Go straight on until you reach a tarmac road.

(4) Turn left and follow this track until you reach the junction with the D301 (cross on the right). Cross the track and head down the path. After the ford, ignore the path on the right. Head back up to the road.

(5) Turn right. Walk through the hamlet, staying on the road until you reach the junction in a bend with a path crossing it.

(6) Turn left (watch out for vehicles coming round the bend). The path is lined with fairly dense hedges and gardens, then woods.

(7) Cross the D85 with care. Keep to the left-hand verge for about a hundred metres. At the end of the hedge, leave the road by turning left. Continue and turn right at the first junction and left at the next. At the 299m mark, follow the path (the left-hand path shown on the IGN map no longer exists).

(8) Head right onto the tarmac road for about 100 metres. Turn onto the path on the left just before the bend. After a right-angle bend, turn immediately right and head down to the cross-path.

(9) Take this path on the left, lined with hedges, and continue to the road.

(10) Cross this road with care and take the path opposite. Continue, keeping the fields on your right at all times. At the junction, stay on the main path and do not take the track shown on the IGN map.

(11) Cross this road with care and take the path, following a slight left/right curve. You will reach a junction of four old tracks.

(12) Turn left uphill and cross the small road to continue along the old Roman road, which climbs and turns sharply left. Just before the copse, leave this road and go straight on until you reach some agricultural sheds.

(13) Follow the path down to a small tarmac road, passing a path on the right as you go. When you reach the road, turn right and continue for about 300m.

(14) Head back up the path on the right. Pass the sewage treatment plant and arrive at a service road.

(15) Turn right and pass between the livestock buildings. At the crossroads, turn left. Continue along this main road to reach the church (S/E).

Worth a visit

At (12), this crossroads is steeped in history: you leave an old railway line to take an ancient Roman road that joins from the right and continues to the left. The name of this route was changed following land consolidation; as its course was altered at Bois Joly (Les Sept Arpents), it is now called the Voie des Romains. For the rest of its route, it reverts to the name Ancienne voie romaine.

Apart from the length, the real practical difficulty lies in the fact that the path is obscured by tall grass on the one hand and encroaching crops on the other……so you have to navigate by sight using the Visorando app for at least 300 metres!!!!
Otherwise, there are few or no signposts.
A pleasant walk nonetheless, with little road and little shade too.

A lovely walk. Make sure you bring a map: some of the damaged signposts have been left lying on the ground, m
which do not point in the right direction.

The final section, which largely follows the old railway track, is a bit of a long, straight stretch, so don’t forget to bring a water bottle if it’s very hot. Otherwise, it’s a pleasant walk with lovely views.
