Ascent to Le Dérochoir – Caution: exposed section.
(S/E) Follow the signs for "Le Dérochoir". The path climbs through the forest.
(1) At the first intersection, turn left. Cross Les Mollays, continue to the right at the next fork and pass Ayères des Rocs (1,641 m). You will soon reach the beautiful hamlet of Ayères des Pierrières (1,637 m).
(2) At the exit of the hamlet, take the path that climbs to the left along a stream that is probably dry. The trail climbs quickly, first on grassy slopes, then on rocks. Follow the numerous red round markers, some of which are faded. The path gradually approaches the rock faces and begins to cross the gigantic Dérochoir scree slope (created by a spectacular rockfall in August 1751).
(3) Weave between the boulders to approach a rocky peak resembling the prow of a ship and reach a pass. After a few more rocks, leave the pass for less rugged terrain. Continue to the right on stony ground to the foot of the cliff. On the left, there is a magnificent view of the Pointe du Dérochoir.
The climb up Le Dérochoir requires extreme caution (see Practical Information), even though the ascent is made easier by ropes, ladders, handrails and metal steps similar to those found on a via ferrata.
(4) Access the Passage du Dérochoir, at 2,200 metres. 360° panorama: the Aiguille Verte, the Mont Blanc range, the Passy valley, the Beaufortain massif, the Aravis, Pointe du Dérochoir, the Désert de Platé (Europe's largest sharp limestone pavement), the Grand Pré, and in the distance the Chalets de Sales and the Rochers des Fiz.
Descend on the right through the rocks via the combe towards Grand Pré.
(5) At the intersection, continue straight ahead. At the end of Grand Pré, keep an eye on the rock face on your left, where you are sure to see ibex playing among the rocks. Then pass the Chalets de Sales to reach the Refuge de Sales at 1,874m (S/E).
