Description of the walk

Start from the car park at the post office in Champcueil, opposite the church porch

(S/E) Turn right off the church onto Rue de la Procession, then right onto Route de Noisement (road sign for Noisement, Mondeville). Continue along this road for 800 m.
The road passes between two white barriers. On either side, you will notice a strip of land slightly raised above the fields. This strip forms the embankment of the Vanne and Loing aqueduct.

(1) Take the path on the left that follows the aqueduct. After a right-hand bend at the edge of the forest, you will come to a metal barrier. Continue straight ahead, following the aqueduct and ignoring several paths and tracks that branch off to the left. You will arrive at the foot of the "hundred steps".

(2) At this point, the aqueduct passes through a tunnel under the hill, but the path that runs alongside it climbs up a staircase whose steps are made of single blocks of sandstone, on the edges of which you can still see the marks left by the wedges used to split the stone.

At the top of the steps, you will find theGR®11(red and white markings), which you take on the left. An oak-lined path leads to the Tour du Buisson.

(3) Climbing up to the terrace via the spiral staircase, there is a beautiful view to the north, as far as the Eiffel Tower in good weather. Continuing alongthe GR® trail, you arrive at the Platière du Télégraphe, marked by an information board. This is a protected area with fragile vegetation. On the right-hand side of the path, you will walk alongside one of the many sandstone quarries in the Forêt des Avaux.

(4) When you reach the second information panel indicating the exit from the plateau, leave theGR® and take a blue-marked path on the left. This path stays on the ridge for a while, then descends into an area with sparse trees.

(5) At this point, when you reach the remains of a dry stone wall, leave the blue markings and take an unmarked path that climbs up to the right. Staying on the ridge, ignore a path on the left and make a return trip to the remains of a Chappe telegraph tower.

(6) On the way back, take the path on the right that you passed on the way there. This path joins a wider track, which you take on the right and which leads to the road to Beauvais. Follow the road south for a few dozen metres.

(7) Leave it on the left at a forest barrier (signposted "Sentier des Ducs"). To the right of the picnic tables, take a sandy path that climbs with a few steps made from half-buried tree trunks. Here you will find blue markings, which you follow to the top of the Rocher du Duc.

(8) Just before the top of the rock, you will see theGR®11markings (red and white). Leave the blue trail and follow theGR® towards Beauvais (south-west then south) until you reach the hamlet of Beauvais. Go through Rues de la Couture, Rue du Gazon and Place Adeline.

(9) At the exit of the hamlet, leave theGR® which turns right onto the Chemin de la Messe and continue straight ahead into the Vallée de Chenevière. At the exit of the valley, you will cross the aqueduct again, which can be seen to the south by a line of trees in the fields.

(10) At the end of the forest, the main path turns right. Continue straight ahead in the valley until you reach elevation 151, where you will come out onto the Beauce plateau.

(11) Turn slightly right and continue straight ahead. Cross two roads.

(12) After a left turn, take the path on the right that leads to the Malvoisine farm.

(13) At the farm, take theGR®11on the right. After crossing the D153, you will find a metal gate on the left at the corner of a wood.

(14) Leave theGR® and turn left, then after 50 m turn left again onto the path that runs alongside the woods. This path then descends, crosses the aqueduct at the edge of the woods and leads directly back to the church (S/E) via Rue Royale.

Notes

Variations
- For those who find crossing the wide open fields a little tedious, it is possible to shorten the second part. You can still go to point (11) to get a glimpse of the plateau. At this junction, take the path that branches off to the right and then, after 500 m, take the path to Noise on the left. You will arrive at the hamlet of Noisement, where you will rejoin theGR®11on the left to return to point (14). The length of the circuit is then 11 km.
- Conversely, for more shade and less wind, you can extend the route by continuing straight ahead at point (12) to rejoin theGR®11at the edge of the forest. Turn right, then right again at the junction with theGR®11Cto return to point (13).

Worth a visit

Historical information comes from the Champcueil Town Hall website, which you can refer to. Additional details that I was able to find are summarised below.

  • Champcueil Church: 12th-century Church of the Assumption, somewhat over-restored and unfortunately closed.
  • Aqueduct of the Vanne and Loing: this aqueduct, 150 km long at its longest point, supplies Paris with water. It was built between 1866 and 1874. Historical details can be found on this website or technical details on this one.
  • Tour du Buisson, an annex of the Château du Buisson located below, was built in 1847 to serve as an astronomical observatory.
  • Chappe Telegraph: unfortunately, only the base and a corner of the wall remain, but if you walk out onto the rocks, you have a clear view to the south. The location of the tower was well chosen.
  • Malvoisine Farm: after the farm, you pass a concrete cylinder (marked on the map) which is a geodetic signal reminding us that Malvoisine Farm was the southernmost point when the meridian was measured by Abbé Picard in 1670. This landmark is now lost at the edge of a cornfield and, with the trees having grown, neither the Montlhéry tower nor the Brie-Comte-Robert bell tower, which were the other two points of the triangle, can be seen.

Always be cautious and plan ahead when you're outdoors. Visorando and the author of this route cannot be held responsible for any accidents occurring on this route.

The GR® and PR® markings are the intellectual property of the Fédération Française de Randonnée Pédestre.

Very pleasant hike to point 10 and after 14. As many have pointed out, the section between 10 and 14 is monotonous and not very interesting. The Malvoisine farm is ugly and its surroundings are dirty and muddy. In my opinion, it's best to take the shortcut from 10 or 11. The GPS track can be very useful between 4 and 8.

A beautiful hike, not very crowded. Varied route, pretty little villages with beautiful houses, sand and rocks, ending in forests and fields. In bright sunshine, a large section is very exposed.

There are many fields to cross in the second part, and beware of rain, which means mud and difficult walking conditions at points 10 to 14.
Very pleasant wooded section.
Point number 7 is very confusing, with unclear markings, as is often the case, unfortunately.
For safety reasons, it would be advisable to include the name of the walk instead of just a number.

A pleasant and varied hike across the beautiful Télégraphe plateau.
Due to time constraints, we bypassed the Malvoisine plateau by taking the farm track on the right at point 10, which leads directly to point 14 (10 km in total).

a hike with lots of contrasts between rocks where you can do a bit of climbing, like in Fontainebleau, and fields on a plateau where you walk for quite a long time, but with blue skies and a light breeze, it wasn't too hard, and luckily the mud had dried up! The description is pretty basic, but with a compass and a map, you can find your way around. Of course, there were crowds of people on the rocks.
The only negative point for me was the Malvoisine farm: old, dirty buildings with agricultural machinery in a state of neglect. I don't find this loop very interesting. It's better to follow the departmental road for a while to finish the hike in the forest and avoid the farm and its geodetic point

Excellent hike 🥾 with beautiful alternating landscapes
Be careful at the plaster quarry on the way out. The path is not easy to follow as there are no landmarks
A long stretch across fields to be done in good weather; take the longer 15 km route, which is more pleasant and shaded
A beautiful route in a beautiful location with a view to be seen from the top of the bush tower

Thanks, Jean-Marc Rollin, for your constructive feedback.
Now that I'm in Ardèche, I'm finding it a bit difficult to maintain this route, but your suggestion is detailed enough for me to remember some of it.
Personally, on my rides in the Ile de France region, I've always liked wide open spaces that are flat but slightly rounded, where you can see the sky all around you. That's why, when I designed this route, I chose to include a wooded section and a plateau section.
For those who find the straight paths too monotonous, I had already suggested a variation to shorten this section, but your suggestion to extend it also seems interesting. I'll try to include it in the description.

As for the Duc rock, I agree with you that the GR signposting leaves something to be desired; this was already the case six years ago. However, my route follows the large-scale IGN map, which is fairly accurate.

Hello,

Thanks for the feedback.

- It is difficult to find your way around Rocher du Duc (random markings)
- As is always the case in open spaces, the route on the plateau is uncertain: you will need a map and a compass, as there are no reliable landmarks.

Yes, and for those who are not familiar with map and compass navigation, in addition to the description and the IGN 1:25,000 map, virtual signage is available in the form of a GPS app.

This tool, offered free of charge by Visorando, allows you to validate waypoints and thus clear up any doubts about your orientation.

- It would be a good idea to enlarge the map provided with the description (a larger scale would be welcome).

This is entirely possible when printing. You can print pages 1, 2 and 4 on A4 and page 3 (map) on A3. This depends on the PDF printing software you use.

See you soon!

Excellent description for an original walk with historical commentary, which is a real bonus. It would be good to replace the crossing of the plateau with another 3 km that is less monotonous. I can't see how, but I'm not there. Does anyone have any ideas? Thank you. Catherine

A very pleasant route, especially the first part, which we were able to do in beautiful weather on 27 February, even stopping for a picnic in short sleeves.
Like several of our predecessors, we had a little trouble with point 5. After looking around, we found a landmark consisting of the remains of a dry stone wall.

It would therefore seem wise to replace (at the end of point 4):
This path stays on the ridge for a while, then descends into an area "WHERE THE TREES ARE SCARCE".

Then, at the beginning of point 5: WHEN YOU REACH THE REMAINS OF A DRY STONE WALL, leave the blue markings...

Thanks to the author of this charming hike.
