Champ du Feu and Col de la Perheux from Fouday

This hike will take you through Ban-de-la-Roche, a place dear to Pastor Jean-Frédéric Oberlin, who served there for 60 years. The route will take you through magnificent landscapes, past a little-known castle (or what remains of it) and to the highest point in the Bas-Rhin.
It is a fairly long hike with a significant elevation gain, classified as difficult, which I completed in about 7 hours of walking.

Description of the walk

Enter the village of Fouday and park at the first crossroads on the left; there are parking spaces in front of the town hall.

(S/E) Retrace your steps, cross La Schirgoutte, carefully cross the D57 heading south, and follow the yellow ring markings which, after about a hundred metres, rise sharply to the left. The path is also marked with blue triangles.

(1) Climb for about 100 metres, then follow the forest path that curves to the left and follows a steady slope along the contour lines. After about 2 kilometres, you will reach the village of Blancherupt.

(2) Turn left, descend to cross the valley, then climb up the other side to reach the road. Take the road on the right uphill and cross the village to the church.

(3) Behind the church, follow the blue triangle markings again to the left, which climb into the forest. After about 250 m, take the path on the left, still marked with blue triangles. The forest path goes around the summit of La Boucherie and arrives at a road above Bellefosse.

(4) Take the road on the left and enter the village.

(5) At the Ferme-Auberge du Ban de la Roche, turn right at the three-way junction. After about 100 metres, climb up to the right along the path marked with a yellow cross. It winds its way between a hedge of conifers on the left and the wall of a house on the right. At the top of the pastures, before entering the forest, turn around to admire the panorama, from Donon on the left to the village of Belmont on the right. At the edge of the forest, join the forest path above the spring catchment, marked with a yellow triangle, yellow easel and yellow cross.

(6) Follow it to the left towards the Château de la Roche. Reach the castle (12th century, destroyed in the 15th century, hideout of a robber knight).

(7) Going down the ladders that lead to the top of the castle, turn right and continue on the path marked with a yellow cross. Follow this path to Col de la Charbonnière. After a few hairpin bends, turn left onto the flat forest path, still heading towards Champ du Feu.

(8) When you leave the forest, you will come to a farm and a tarmac path, which you should take, continuing uphill. The path winds around pastures and becomes a gravel path that enters the forest and then arrives at the D214.

(9) Follow this road to the left for about 100 metres, then take the Route Forestière des Bottelets (marked with yellow crosses leading to the Col de la Charbonnière and then to Champ du Feu).

(10) After about 1 km, cross a stream. Ignore the path marked on the map 50 m further on that climbs to the right (it no longer exists) and continue straight ahead, still on the Route Forestière des Bottelets. At the next crossroads, cross the stream and continue on a small path opposite, marked with a yellow cross and red disc. Join the D214, which climbs to the Col de la Charbonnière, about 200 m higher.

(11) At the pass, you will find the Auberge de la Charbonnière on one side and the memorial to the battle of August 1914 on the other. Go around the inn and head north on the path to the left of the road (marked with a yellow cross). After 150 m, turn left onto the Route Forestière du Hibou.

(12) After 100 metres, leave the road on the right and head up into the forest. At the three-way junction, leave the path marked with a yellow cross on the left and take the path marked with a blue rectangle on the right towards the Tour du Champ du Feu.

(13) At the tower, go around it on the left, then descend towards La Serva via the Red-White-Red Rectangle marked trail. Follow the trail that runs alongside the road, then the ski lift. Please note: in foggy weather, it may be difficult to find your way. Go behind the ski club chalet and you will arrive at La Serva, opposite the Chalet du Champ du Feu.

(14) Cross the road and follow it to the left. At the exit of La Serva, pass in front of the Les Sapins holiday chalet hotel and turn right onto the Route Forestière du Haut des Monts (towards Rothau – La Perheux).

(15) After a right-hand bend, take the path at a 90° angle to the left (marked with red-white-red rectangles and yellow rings). At the large six-way crossroads (elevation 988 on the map), continue straight ahead towards Rothau, still following the red-white-red rectangle markings.

(16) As you leave the forest, admire the view. A little further down, cross a forest path and continue straight ahead across the pastures towards La Perheux and Rothau (red-white-red rectangle and yellow ring markings). You will arrive at the Col de la Perheux.

(17) Continue straight ahead and leave the path to Rothau on your right. Follow the yellow triangle markings (towards Solbach and Fouday).

(18) At the crossroads, stay on the left-hand path. At the next crossroads, turn left and descend towards Solbach. Enter the village and continue straight downhill. Pass a street on your left, then, above the temple, turn left onto Chemin de la Charrière.

(19) Pass the cemetery and go down the path that runs along the hill, then plunges into the forest. Ten metres after entering the forest, turn right.

(20) Cross a forest path and continue straight ahead down the slope (yellow triangle markings). This will take you to Fouday Town Hall (S/E).
