Description of the walk

From Lempde-sur-Alagnon (A75 Exit 19), take the D909 towards Issoire. After the bridge, turn left towards Chambezon. In Chambezon, there is a car park at the junction of Rue de la Mairie and Rue du Ruisseau (there is another car park at the entrance to the village).

Yellow markings forthe PR®495(mostly, nothing the rest of the time).

(S/E) From the car park in the village, take Rue de l'Alagnon (no markings). Then, turn into the second street on the right, Rue du Cour, and follow it to the end. Just after the bend, follow the path on the left which climbs up towards the plateau.

(1) At the fork, take the path on the right (yellow markings).

(2) At the top of the plateau, at the junction with the tracks, take the track on the left and continue straight on.

(3) From this point (altitude 552), the path is less visible; it then becomes more challenging as it descends towards the Alagnon valley.

(4) Once you reach the bottom of the valley, cross the stream and join the track. Then turn left and head towards the railway line.

(5) At the railway line, turn left and after 100 metres, pass close to a bridge. Continue straight on, following the track.

(6) Just before the cemetery, ignore the path on the right and continue straight on towards the village of Chambezon. Return to the car park (S/E).

The descent isn’t that difficult; however, it can become trickier (slippery) if the ground is wet.
Can be completed in two hours, including photo stops.

The estimated time is calculated automatically based on the distance and elevation gain; for my part, when I created the route, it took me two hours, including stops to take photos and admire the scenery.

Out of more than 20 routes created over the last four months, this is the only one I’ve marked as ‘difficult’.

If that can stop people from setting off in flip-flops on this descent in wet weather!!!!!

A lovely route with beautiful views over the Alagnon and Léotoing Castle.
We did this route in fine weather and I’d recommend doing so, as the descent towards the Alagnon is actually quite challenging, though I wouldn’t have classified this hike as ‘difficult’. The elevation gain is relatively low and the estimated time is generous, as we saved a good half an hour even though my wife walks rather slowly.
