Description of the walk

Departure from the hamlet of Ubac. Park at the side of the road at the bottom of the hamlet, opposite the leisure area and below the cross-country skiing centre.

(S/E) Opposite the cross-country skiing centre, turn right and follow the Route de l'Ubac. Pass the chapel, then the hotel-restaurant and continue along the track until you reach the fork after the bridge over the stream.

(1) Continue along the track, climbing to the right, and reach the next fork.

(2) Continue straight ahead and enter the narrow valley. Cross the footbridge over the Torrent du Prentic, then continue along the path on the left bank.

(3) At the water intake, continue along a track and you will soon reach a fork.

(4) Turn left, ford thefirst stream (Torrent des Muandes) , then take the footbridge over thesecond (Torrent de Prentiq) to reach the Chalets de Prentiq.

(5) Take the path on the right for a round trip to reach a cross, then the ruins of the hamlet.
After enjoying the site, follow the track on the right leading to the chalets and rejoin the route you took earlier.

(2) Continue downhill to the right and reach the bridge over the torrent.

(1) Ignore it and continue on the track opposite until you reach the road.

(6) Turn left and head back to the cross-country ski centre (S/E).

Notes

(4) The Torrent des Muandes can be crossed at a ford. In June 2025, the water was still quite high.

Between (S/E) and (1), accommodation and food are available at Ban de l'Ours.

(5) There is an open hut for shelter or even sleeping.

(5) You may encounter herd protection dogs (patous). If they come towards you barking, stop, speak to them calmly (as you would to your own dogs if you have any) and then continue on your way, veering away from the herd. They will accompany you for a short distance and then return to the herd once you are out of sight.

Worth a visit

Before these high-altitude practices fell into disuse, there was a time when the inhabitants of Ubac raised herds of cows, pigs and sheep and grew rye and potatoes on these high lands. Women, children and the elderly also made bread, butter and cheese for the whole family. At the beginning of the 20th century, around fifteen families shared this precious agricultural land.

This hike is a real favourite, with a climb that's not too difficult (and in the shade) along the stream.
After the first hut, you find yourself in the Ecrins National Park.
At the Sellar hut, there was a flock of sheep (and the shepherdess) and some patous, two of which were outside the enclosure.
Although they saw us, they didn't bark, but we preferred not to approach the hut.
The descent was smooth.
A lovely hike :-)
