Description of the walk

Park in the car park alongside the D101, available for visitors to Miolans Castle.

(S/E) Follow the departmental road, leaving the entrance to the castle on your right. Cross the first junction and proceed to the next one.

(1) Turn left towards La Maserie, keep left at the first junction then turn sharply left at the second to join a small road (Route de Montplan). Note a sign indicating the start of a hazardous area at this point.

(2) Turn right and head for the first waterfall on the Ruisseau de Cruet.

(3) Continue along the path without difficulty to cross the stream and reach the second waterfall on the Ruisseau de Dom Girard.

(4) Continue along the path, which is easy to follow, cross the Ruisseau de Raffoux further on, then follow the winding path before crossing the Ruisseau de la Colonne. A straighter section then leads to the third waterfall, on the Vieille Bialle.

(5) Go straight on and continue along the tarmac road to the Ruisseau du Plan Cruet.

(6) Navigate the hairpin bend to the right (Chemin des Effoyères) and continue straight on. Pass through a double S-bend and reach a three-way junction at a place called Charrue.

(7) Turn right onto the dead-end road, then continue along the track to reach Vieille Bialle.

(8) Cross the bridge and continue past the Côte Ruffin mast.

(9) Cross the bridge over the Ruisseau de Raffoux and go straight on . From here, there are educational signs about the vineyard. Soon, cross a road and arrive at a fork with a stone cross in the centre. Continue straight ahead (Chemin du Four), ignore the turn-offs to the left and arrive at a path on the right with a stone retaining wall on your right.

(10) Take this path to the right, following the sign for “Miolans”, rejoin the vineyards, walk past the church and reach a path on the right at a building on the left with a slab serving as a roof.

(11) Continue straight ahead along the path through the vineyards until you reach a junction with the Chemin des Ripes, opposite. Turn right (D101) towards Château de Miolans, negotiate the hairpin bend to the left, then find the start of a path on the right.

(12) Take this path; it crosses the road further on and eventually joins it. Keep going in the same direction until you reach the junction you passed on the way out.

(1) Retrace your steps in the opposite direction to return to the car park (S/E).

A change of direction that wasn’t clearly marked on the map. Luckily, we had Google Maps on our phones... A fairly steep descent at one point.
A difficult stream to cross. One of us fell into the water...
It was a bit of a slog getting back to Myolans by road
Otherwise, a lovely walk without too much of an elevation gain and a very pleasant return through the vineyards.

A pleasant, easy walk, particularly suitable for older people or those with children, through the woods and then back along the vineyards. There are some lovely views of the mountains and the Haute Combe de Savoie. The climb up to the castle is a bit of a struggle as it’s mostly along the road. The signposting is poor, but thankfully your description is detailed and accurate. A good approach is to follow the route on your printed map with the description and on your phone using the IGN app, checking your position via satellite from time to time. Crossing the large stream is a bit tricky: slippery stones and a fairly strong current. One of our friends fell into the water, fortunately without serious injury...

I set off from the castle car park. It’s an interesting route, but you need to be careful after the last waterfall to make sure you leave the main path. There’s a small signpost indicating this, but it’s not very clear. It’s a lovely walk in the shade on the way there, which can be quite pleasant in summer. I didn’t find crossing the streams too much of a bother.

Hello
I set off from St Pierre d'Albigny (from the school) on a circular route
Very pretty waterfalls cascading from a great height
However, this can pose a few difficulties. When you leave the main path, after the ruins, you cross the La Colonne stream – fortunately it was dry, as I can’t imagine how it would be otherwise (the stream drops off quite steeply)
The last stream is also quite impressive; there was quite a bit of water to cross and a sign warns of the danger of crossing it; you’ll have to cross it again on the way back further down, but it’s less daunting – it just gets your shoes wet
Just before reaching the mill, there is another stream. The bridge is broken and, even though there isn’t too much water, it’s very steep-sided

In conclusion, a lovely walk but one that can be difficult depending on the conditions

For your information, 20 years ago I made it as far as the penultimate waterfall, and that was in May... there was a huge snowfield!!!

A very pleasant walk offering the chance to explore the region through the vineyards and charming villages ablaze with flowers. There are no major difficulties, but do take care when crossing the first stream, which remains quite tricky following the rain the previous week. The highlight, however, was seeing some beautiful waterfalls:
