Description of the walk

Access via the D918, just after the hamlet of Artigues, before La Mongie. A few parking spaces are available along the D918. Alternatively, park in the hamlet of Artigues, where a marked path leads to the D918.

(S/E) Take this road uphill and leave it on the right (caution) to take theGR®10Cmarked in white and red at the bridge. Note: after about 50 metres, leave the path to see the beautiful Arizes waterfall. Return to the path and continue to the right to reach the Cabanes de Tramazaygues crossroads.

(1) Go around them by turning right. Cross the bridge and follow theGR®10Con the left. Walk along the left bank of the Adour d'Arizes. You will arrive at the Pont des Vaquès.

(2) Cross it, leave theGR® here and take the yellow marked trail on the left towards La Mongie. Climb steadily through the rhododendrons. Pass afirst pass and then reach thesecond pass, the highest point of the hike.

(3) Descend following the marked trail until you reach a Y-shaped intersection.

(4) Turn left and follow the power lines to reach the Castillon Dam.

(5) Continue along the path, ignoring all the turnings on the right or left, until you reach the crossroads you passed on the way up.

(1) Retrace your steps in the opposite direction to return (take care) to the car park on the edge of the D918 (S/E).

You can join this lovely loop by setting off on foot from La Mongie: take the path that starts from Rue du Pene-Negre

Beautiful route, shaded on the climb (interesting in hot weather). Beautiful waterfall at the very beginning. The start of the route is a little steep, but not too difficult. Towards the summit, there is a beautiful view of the Pic du Midi.
The return trip, however, (if you do the loop via the reservoir) is not very interesting. The descent is through ferns with a view of the La Mongie car park and the road to the Col du Tourmalet. It's better to go past the reservoir and descend through the trees to rejoin the path you took on the way up.

We tackle the steep but short slope right from the start. Be careful of the leaves at this time of year, which can make the slope slippery (the same applies on the way back).
The plateau you reach is very pleasant (for a picnic break, for example) with the Pic du Midi coming into view and accompanying you for a long time.
Overall, this is a fairly easy hike with very pleasant scenery.

There is no longer a lake, but the view of the Pic du Midi is fantastic.

Please note that the description clearly indicates the starting point as "near the bridge", whereas 100 metres further down there is a signposted hiking trail. This is not a problem, as the two paths meet up again 1 kilometre further up, but at the start the directions seem to be reversed.
