From La Mure, head towards Entraigues. In the village, take the road on the right, towards Valjouffrey (with an ‘e’).
Drive straight through this second village (caution: narrow street, junctions can be tricky) and continue for a further 7 km to the end of the road at the Désert de Valjouffray (with an ‘a’).
Park in the car park on the left at the last bend before the hamlet.
(S/E) Walk up towards the hamlet along the short stretch of road and, at the wash house (drinking water), turn right. Pass a second basin (on the left) and walk down a little.
(1) Cross the bridge on the right (sign pointing to the waterfall). Walk back up the other side to the last houses and continue straight on, staying on the main track running along the edge of the meadows until you reach the entrance to the Écrins National Park.
Once inside the park, continue straight on until you reach the Cascade de la Pisse.
(2) Cross the stream via a wooden footbridge and continue for a further 300 m or so along the main track, which gradually turns into a path.
(3) At the crossroads, leave the route leading to the Font Turbat huts and take the path on the left which climbs directly up the slope. The climb is quite steep for a good half of the route, then levels off before reaching the pass that closes off the Basse Pisse valley, a large glacial cirque formed by the surrounding peaks.
At this point, you can venture further into this vast space to discover its full majesty. However, the further you go, the less visible the path becomes!
(4) Once you reach the centre of this valley and have admired the peaks of Pointe Swan, Les Berches and Montagnon, turn back to return via the same route to the Désert de Valjouffray (S/E).
