Fontcouverte Campsite - Lac de la Ponsonnière

For this first three-day stage, the route offers magnificent views of the Écrins Massif at the Col du Chardonnet and then of the Grand Lac. We have chosen to camp at Lac de la Ponsonnière, but it is entirely possible to camp on the heights of the Grand Lac, near the pastoral house. This allows you to shorten the duration of this first day slightly and, above all, reduce the elevation gain by around 200m.

Description of the walk

Park opposite the Fontcouverte campsite. If the car park is full, there is another one 200 m further on.

(S) Immediately join theGR®57trail, which heads off to the left. Begin a fairly steep climb, passing in front of the Laraux chalets. Stay on the path to the right, continuing on to cross the stream via a small wooden bridge. Continue the ascent to reach the Refuge du Chardonnet.

(1) Continue through the mountain pastures, still on theGR®, and, after crossing the Ruisseau du Raisin, reach the junction with theGR®57.

(2) Take the right-hand branch towards the Col du Chardonnet; the left-hand branch leads to the Col de Terre Noire. Continue the ascent, skirting the dry bed of Lac du Châtelard. Begin the final climb, passing some distance from Lac de la Mine to emerge at the Col du Chardonnet Sud.

(3) Here, begin a fairly steep descent with numerous hairpin bends. Finish this descent at the junction at the hamlet of Clôt des Vaches.

(4) Keep to the right on theGR® and begin another gentle climb. After a wide circular loop to the left, reach the junction with the Grand Lac trail, near the shepherd’s hut.

(5) Turn right and continue the climb through the mountain pasture to reach, without difficulty, Lac de la Ponsonnière, today’s stop and campsite (E).

A magnificent route, covered in flowers at the start of this sunny summer. Please note, however, that the spring we expected to find at the shepherd’s hut (5) had run dry by the end of June 2023, which forced us to head back down towards Clos aux Vaches to find a source of water. The Rif valley, which climbs towards the lake and the Col de la Ponsonnière, is a peat bog. You will not find any drinking water there. However, there are plenty of drinkable springs on the descent from the Col du Chardonnet towards Clos aux Vaches. Remember to top up your water supplies as you pass. Because of this delay, we camped in the valley and tackled the Col de la Ponsonnière the following day. This secluded valley is magnificent and the climb to the pass is a gentle one.

Although access to the campsite is restricted, the area was very busy at the end of August, though mainly with families and day-trippers. Once you head up the paths, there are far fewer people. The route is truly beautiful, and the icing on the cake was the night spent camping by Lake Ponsonnière, where we were joined by some trout fishermen. A wonderful memory!

I decided to take a short tour of the Cerces, starting from the Fontcouverte campsite and passing by Lake Ponsonnière – it’s a real treat, a magnificent spot. In fact, you then reach the Col de la Ponsonnière, where you have a superb view of the large lake, followed by Lake Cerces, the Col des Cerces, Lake Ban, Lake Rond, Lake Clarée, and so on...
It’s a magnificent hike, longer than the route via the Col des Béraudes but easier, as the Col des Béraudes is often snow-covered and more technically demanding for those who suffer from vertigo!! (The route via Lac des Béraudes joins the latter at the Col de la Ponsonnière).
This saves you from having to make a return trip; it’s a route!
Even if you only go as far as Lac de la Ponsonnière, it’s magical – the view from Col Chardonnet is superb!! You can see Le Pelvoux, Le Dôme and the Barre des Ecrins, La Meije, etc.
This hike is an absolute must!!

Hello, they’ve been posted but are still awaiting approval by a moderator.
If it’s urgent, I can send you the PDF via private message. Otherwise, to put it simply, the second stage goes to the Drayeres refuge and the last one is the return to the Fontcouverte campsite via the Lacs Ronds and Lac Long.
