Description of the walk

Park near the church, spaces available along the street. Sign for the Lac du Mont BélierPR®® hike at Le Mont Redon bar, near the church entrance.
PR®® signposting from Lac du Mont Bélier Green.

(S/E) Opposite the church entrance, take the street on the left (at the hiking sign). Ignore a street on the left and, at the fork, keep right. Ignore a street on the right and, at the end of the street, continue straight ahead on the path (Chemin des Roucougues). Stay on this path until you reach a road. Follow it to the right for about 50 metres, then turn left to cross the hamlet of Clavières, ignoring the two access roads on the right.

(1) Turn onto the third path on the right and continue until you reach a road.

(2) Follow it to the right. Just before the road bends to the right, turn onto the path on the left, which quickly joins the end of a road that you should follow to reach a place called Cachebourre. Cross the hamlet and you will come to an intersection with the access road.

(3) Continue straight ahead on the path. Turn left under the high-voltage power line and approach a road. Do not join it, but take the path on the right immediately.

(4) At the fork in the path, keep to the right and head towards the hamlet of Le Mazou.

(5) Follow the road to the left, then keep right at the fork just after, heading towards Pré du Lac. Reach the access point to this locality.

(6) Continue straight ahead on the path that extends the road, overlooking Lac du Mont Bélier, enter the undergrowth and continue on this path.

(7) Ignore the path on the right and continue along the small road that veers to the left, continuing around the lake.

(8) Leave the road and take a path down to the left towards the lake. Further on, it veers to the right and joins a road at the hamlet of Mont de Bélier.

(9) Follow the road to the left and cross the hamlet, heading towards Forêt d'Algère, ignoring the two roads on the left. At the end of the road, continue along a path.

(10) At the fork in the path, at the edge of the forest (Forêt Domaniale d'Algère), take the left fork. Continue along this path, ignoring a path branching off to the right. Cross the Ruisseau de la Scie stream and you will immediately come to a road.

(11) Follow it to the left for about 150 m, then turn onto a path leading off to the left. Shortly afterwards, ignore a turn-off to the left, then an access road to the right. Pass a wayside cross, reach the end of a road and follow it to return to the Clavières intersection.

(1) Retrace your steps along the outward route to return to the church of Saint-Étienne-de-Chomeil.

(S/E) At the circular fountain, turn your back on the church and follow the street opposite for about 50 metres to discover a manor house. Then retrace your steps.

- This route is very interesting in that it offers varied landscapes such as open spaces, cliffs with beautiful views (particularly towards Artense and the Sancy massif), forests, lakes... and the paths and tracks are fairly easy to follow. The walk through the Algères forest is easy and very relaxing.
- If I had to make a suggestion, it would be to invite hikers to take the short circular path that allows them to discover the pretty village of Bélier, which feels like it's at the end of the world, very close to point 11 (Étang de la Scie). The areas around the houses are well maintained and in June they were beautifully decorated with flowers.
- Finally, for those who would like to shorten this route, there is the option of parking your vehicle at Les Brougues!
