Cala del Canyets - Cala d'en Bosc

Starting from San Feliu de Guixols, this hike is divided into two distinct parts of very different difficulty. The first part takes you through the hills via a well-marked path through beautiful pine undergrowth. It then leads to the delightful Cala Canyets, a little haven of peace even in high season. The return journey follows the old Cami de Ronda route, which has now been diverted and is therefore unmarked. The paths leading to Cala d'Urgell and then to the tiny Cala d'en Bosc are indistinct and difficult to follow in a rather steep environment where great care is required. The passage of large boulders along the seashore along these two coves also presents a certain challenge. The end of the route partly follows the GI-682 and then rejoins the starting route for greater comfort. A beautiful adventure in prospect, but reserved for very good walkers who are able to find their way in difficult terrain and cope with very steep slopes

Description of the walk

In San Feliu de Guixols, park in the free car park at the cemetery, located on Ronda de Narcis Massana. There is another car park nearby, which is pay-and-display.

(S/E) Take the access road to the car park, turn right and then take the first left to reach a roundabout. Turn left and follow the road along a dirt track, go around the second roundabout on the left and continue to the first junction.

White and green local trail markings

(1) Turn left to follow the tarmac road that runs alongside houses, then loses its surface after the last of them and turns into a wide dirt track. Pass in front of the old wind turbine at Les Comes and follow this path, which winds its way along greenhouses alongside a high wall.

No markings

(2) Once in the undergrowth, keep left at the fork, leaving the markings on the right, and continue along the fairly rutted path until you see a building that marks the end.

(3) Turn left onto a path that is not very visible and seems to be little used. The slope becomes steeper, the path passes by a ruined building and reaches a fork below the GI-682, where you can clearly hear the noise of traffic.

(4) Continue to the left, skirting the road, then turn right and make two hairpin bends.

(5) At an isolated rock on the right, head in that direction and walk blindly for a few metres as there is no path, until you come to a clearer trail and follow it to the left. After crossing a tree trunk across the path, you will reach a good path.

(6) Turn left and reach Coll de Portes, where there is a post with several markers.

PR®-C101 White and Yellow markings

(7) Turn right, following the markings, and you will come to another fork with a signpost. Turn left, following the direction "Pla de ses Mòdegues," and you will come to a crossroads.

(8) Turn right, keep to the right at the next fork and follow the path that winds pleasantly through the undergrowth. Ignore several trailheads on the right and reach a large crossroads with a multi-directional signpost.

(9) Keep to the right and arrive at the small pass of Mare de Déu.

(10) Keep slightly to the right, following the markings, and you will reach Coll d'en Romaguer.

(11) Continue straight ahead. Keep to the right at the two intersections you encounter, ignore a path on the right further on and arrive at a well-marked shortcut on the right, which very quickly rejoins the path you have just left. You will come out at the end of a tarmac track.

(12) Ignore it and take a sharp left turn, continuing on to the ruins of Sant Benet del Bosc.

No markings

(13) Turn left onto the tarmac road that runs between the old houses and a high fence. Continue along a wide stony track and go to the sharp bend on the right.

(14) Keep left and arrive at the magnificent viewpoint of Dona Espenyada.

(15) Look for the narrow path, which is gravelly for the first few metres, starting on the left and take it. Then begin a tricky descent on this steep, rutted path, which requires attention and caution. Come out onto a more marked track and follow it to the right to quickly reach the GI-682 near a bend. Cross with great caution and head left for a few metres.

(16) Leave the road and follow the wide track on the right that descends towards the sea and leads to a private property.

(17) Before reaching it, turn left onto a narrow path that starts at an old wooden post painted red and white, half lying on the ground in the embankment and difficult to see. Descend gently to Cala del Canyets, where you can enjoy a swim and the very welcoming bar-restaurant.

(18) Go back up to the GI-682.

(16) Turn right and follow this road on the right-hand side, where it is often possible to walk along the edge of the carriageway. Continue to a small area on the right that can be used for parking: a wooden post marks the start of the old Cami de Ronda trail.

(19) Take this path and begin a very difficult descent, given the very faint trail and steep slope. Once back on a clearer trail, the difficulties continue as you continue to descend through the shrubs, which will be very useful for holding on to in order to keep your balance and slow down. At the bottom, you will come to a sign indicating that this is a protected area closed from January to June.

(20) Head towards the beach and start walking along it, first on pebbles of a respectable size, then on large boulders where you have to negotiate your route between the sea and the cliff as best you can. Progress is slow and difficult, with many passages requiring you to use your hands to climb and descend a few short sections, which are not dangerous, but be careful with your ankles. Continue to the end to reach the tiny Cala d'en Bosc, enclosed by the magnificent Punta d'en Bosc, which unfortunately blocks the passage. Look for the wooden staircase on the left and begin the climb, conserving your energy to tackle the very steep slope and high steps. Fortunately, the rope in place along the entire length is a valuable aid. You will arrive at a fork marked by a yellow rope securing another path starting on the left.

(21) Follow this path, which runs straight for about a hundred metres before disappearing. Aim for the GR®-682 above and make your way as best you can over the earthy terrain dotted with low plants, where you will definitely need to use your hands to reach the road, where you will have to climb over the safety barrier.

(22) After this difficult passage, walk quietly along the right-hand side of the road until you reach the point where it splits into two for a short stretch.

(23) Cross carefully to join the path on the left that starts at the foot of a metal safety barrier. Continue straight ahead to climb back up and rejoin the outward route to Pla de ses Mòdegues.

(8) Continue straight ahead and return to Coll de Portes.

(7) Turn left and follow the route taken on the way there in the opposite direction. Be careful between (6) and (5) where the trail temporarily disappears, so that you can safely return to the rock that serves as a landmark.

(5) Then retrace the route you took at the beginning in the opposite direction to return to the cemetery car park (S/E).

Notes

This hike is very demanding. It sometimes takes you over difficult terrain, on very narrow, eroded paths with steep slopes. You will therefore need to be careful not to slip or lose your balance, and you will need to use your hands on numerous occasions. This is particularly the case
* between (15) and (16): narrow and slippery path, crevasses. Very significant elevation gain.
* between (19) and (20): same conditions.
* between (20) and (21): large boulders to climb over and down. Very steep and challenging steps.

In addition, there are several sections where orientation is difficult, either because the trail itself can be very discreet, or because there are so many paths and therefore many possible mistakes. Although the route is marked, the GPX track will be very useful between (4) and (16).

There are no water sources on the route, but you can quench your thirst and satisfy your hunger at Cala del Canyets (20). Swimming is also possible at the same location.

Hiking boots are highly recommended. Walking sticks will be more cumbersome than useful for the reasons mentioned above.
