Cairn 2000 by Ubac de Lure

This short circular walk takes you to Cairn 2000 after crossing
a little-used part of the Lure ridge. The climb, which is well shaded, is on the north-facing side, making it more pleasant in summer.

Description of the walk

Park in the Saint-Robert car park, on the small road (D53) leading from Valbelle to Pas de la Graille

(S/E) Follow the road eastwards for a few hundred metres until you reach the start of a track on the right (red and yellowGRP® markings).

(1) Follow the track to the second bend on the left and leave it to take a path heading south.

(2) This good path, heading generally south-east, leads up a steep climb to the Pas de Jean Richaud.

(3) Then head west, more or less following the ridge and enjoying the scenery, to Cairn 2000 via Pas de la Croix.

(4) Continue west to reach Cairn 2000.
This is a good spot for a picnic, but you will need to move away from Cairn 2000 to find some shade.

(5) Retrace your steps back to Pas de la Croix.

(4) Then take the path on the left towards Jas des Bailles, marked in yellow, and follow it to a track near Clot des Vaches.

(6) Follow this track, which leads back to the road (D53).

(7) You will reach a small path on the right that allows you to avoid the last bend in the track.
After a few metres on the road, you will reach a crossroads where you will find theGR®6.

(8) Follow it to Jas des Bailles.

(9) You will then come to an intersection with a path that leads to Pas de Sumiou.

(10) From there, it is only a few hundred metres back to the car park. (S/E)

Worth a visit

To commemorate the turn of the millennium, the trail markers of the Alpes de Haute Provence departmental hiking committee erected a giant cairn on the Lure ridges.
The inauguration took place on 27 August 2000: many hikers from all over the world placed their stones at the foot of the cairn. A stainless steel tube containing poems of hope for the year 2000 is embedded in the heart of the structure to leave a memory for future generations.
Many hikers continue to bring decorated and signed stones to the cairn.

A hike that consists of a steep climb, a short walk on the plateau that forms the summit of Lure Mountain, and a steep descent identical to the climb, even if it is not the same path. In this respect, I found it a little monotonous. The athletic aspect and the crispness of the autumn air (everything is on the north side of the mountain) were what I enjoyed the most.

I really enjoyed this route because of the variety of landscapes and vegetation and the tranquillity
of the surroundings (admittedly, we only met three people during the week and outside of school holidays). The ascents and descents are steep, and the walking poles were a great help.
My only regret is that I was hoping to see more mountain flowers, but only a tuft of dark blue columbine awaited us at cairn 2000.

Thank you for this trail.

To begin with, you can take a path that starts straight ahead opposite the car park (see the information board in the car park for details), which avoids the first circular.
There is a beautiful view from the ridge, and the 2000 cairn is worth a detour.
Correction from point 8: cross the road and find a path directly opposite, follow it for about 100 metres (Font Reine fountain) and you will find a red and yellow marked path on the right. Follow these red and yellow markings to the car park. This route is different from the one shown on the map provided with the guidebook, but it will take you to the car park without fail.

The ridges are challenging, but the crossing is pleasant and the view from the summit is beautiful. The descent is much less enjoyable. There are many trail junctions, which can make it difficult to know which direction to take.
The other side is certainly more interesting to hike. Still, it's a good walk.

Please note that from the start to Pas de la Croix, the markings are white and red (GR) rather than yellow and red. From Pas de la Croix onwards, the markings are the usual yellow ones.
A very beautiful trail, a little steep, with superb views from the ridge.

Lovely hike on Tuesday, 25 June 2019, under beautiful sunshine and intense heat.
We set off from the car park at 912 m and took a direct path to point 2. For the return journey, we went directly from point 6 to point 2.
Superb view of the ridges and Cairn 2000, very pleasant walk through the woods.
Patrick.

Very beautiful hike, superb view.
The route is very well marked, so it's hard to get lost! Only path number 7 is not maintained, so we went around it via the track and the road.
Note that the climb to point 3 is quite steep, as is the descent to point 6.
The tour took 5 hours, including breaks.

This route is remarkable, as is the site of cairn 2000. Many thanks to our friends at CDRP04 who have left their mark here on the ground, which we all hope will remain for future generations.
A note on the route between points 4 and 6: the trail is located, as indicated, to the north-west of the path highlighted in red.
Thank you for this description.

Beautiful hike, splendid 360° view at the summit.
Slight problem at the start finding the trail points 1/2.
Otherwise, the rest was perfect.

A very beautiful hike, shaded both on the way up and on the way down.
Exceptional views of Dévoluy, Champsaur and Mercantour to the north, and Sainte Baume, Sainte Victoire, etc. to the south. Thank you for this beautiful route.
