Quioules Hut and return via the Orri des Ludines

Circular route to the Quioules hut, returning via the Rieufort de Gascous and Ludines huts.

No technical difficulties (a bit steep in places – this is the Ariège, after all), but the second part of the route is mainly off-track, sometimes a faint track, sometimes nothing at all, and therefore requires good sense of direction or careful following of your GPS track.
Classified as difficult due to the unmarked route and the steep gradients in places.

Stunning views of the Aston massif, the Pic de l’Homme Mort, the beautiful huts and, on the return journey, the Soularac, Saint Barthélémy and Pic du Han. The outward leg along the Ruisseau de Quioulès offers the chance to discover some lovely pools.

This walk can be done in the opposite direction, which would certainly offer a fine view of the Aston massif, but the ascent would then be concentrated in the first section.

Description of the walk

From Les Cabannes, take the D520a towards Aston, then head for the Riète Dam and Étang Laparan.
The start is just before the Riète Dam. There is a car park just before the bridge, at “La Coudènes”. The red and white markings ofthe GR®10, which cross the road at this point, are clearly visible. You’ll take this route on the way back.
Start from the “Coudènes” car park.

(S/E) Cross theGR®10. Follow the road (D520a) uphill; it winds round a few bends before running alongside the dam on the right bank. Cross the Ruisseau d’Aston via the road bridge and continue for a further 100 m.

(1) Leave the road and turn right onto the track. You’ll come to a small bridge crossing the Ruisseau de Quioules. Follow the path (green markings) uphill; the climb is steep to begin with.

(2) Caution: do not venture under the rocky outcrops. Do not hesitate to turn back if you have gone too far. Turn right (north), then west, to continue along the path which passes over a small pass and descends towards the Pont du Pas de la Crabe.

(3) Continue along the right bank on the path – which is sometimes poorly marked – that runs alongside the stream. Initially running alongside it, the path then veers away before drawing close to it again. Cross two footbridges.

(4) Pass under a water-collection pipe that runs up both sides of the mountain.
Caution: do not take the paths that cross or lead up towards the water collection points.
- Continue along the Ruisseau de Quioulès.

(5) You’ll come to a dam and continue across the large flat area: the hut is at the far end of this area.

(6) The path passes close to a footbridge which you will cross on the way back. Carry on straight ahead to reach the Cabane de Quioulès (alt. 1,610 m)

(7) A lovely hut, with a well-equipped open area and a small woodpile next to it.
The second part of the route is mainly off-track, sometimes following a faint track, and requires good sense of direction, or following your GPS track.
From the hut, you can clearly see a pass at around 1,770 m to the north, and two rocky ridges. You need to head up through the forest at this point, between these two ridges. Return to the plain towards the metal footbridge you saw earlier.

(6) Cross the stream and continue northwards through a rather damp area. A faint track leads to the foot of the rocky outcrops. Rejoin the forest and climb (steeply) between the two outcrops. You’ll come to a path, not marked on IGN maps, which climbs towards the pass (alt. 1,770 m).

(8) From the pass, continue through the scree slopes, heading slightly to the left (west). If necessary, there is a footbridge a little further west to cross the stream. You will reach the Rieutort de Gascous hut.

(9) From this hut, a track heads east, then turns northwards, still through the scree, for a long, gently ascending traverse towards a pass at an altitude of 1,800 m.

(10) Descend due north, off the beaten track, through the forest, to a plain and reach the Orri des Ludines (alt. 1,600 m).

(11) Then cross the flat area towards the north-east and rejoin a path along the left bank of the Ruisseau de Calvière, before crossing it via a footbridge.

(12) Continue along the stream until you reach theGR®10;

(13) Follow it to the right down a fairly steep descent which leads to (D:A).

Hello, we did the route the other way round, but the tracklog was a great help because from the Ludines to the Quioules hut you’re off the beaten track
Thank you

I realised I’d got it wrong on this hike on 23 August 2024, with a few errors and inaccuracies in my account.
So I’m starting again, but going the other way. A steady but gentle climb along the GR10.
At point 11, I actually made a mistake: I took the right bank, which isn’t marked on the map, hence the difficulty I had following the stream downwards. You should, of course, take the left bank. But I think there are two footbridges.
.
Next, the climb through the woods is the hardest part (for me) – a direct climb due south, ending on a grassy patch surrounded by woodland. But most of the climb is quite open and the woodland is very patchy.
From the pass at the 10-kilometre mark, you can make out the path leading off into the distance towards a small pass.
.
The path is sometimes poorly marked, so watch your step.
The Rieutort de Gascous hut (9) also welcomes walkers; there’s water from the tap in the kitchen (I assume it’s drinkable). I wanted to take the bridge and the path leading towards Pass 8, but it was impossible as the path had completely disappeared. Follow the track that winds to the left of the azaleas.
At Pass 8, it is not the Rulhe refuge that you can see, but the Calmettes ridge; on the descent, there are cairns at the start, followed by a well-marked track which I followed all the way down. Unfortunately, I didn’t use the GPS track and veered too far to the left, crossing the Quouiles stream as I emerged from the woods.
I filled my water bottle outside the Quouiles hut from a pipe that draws water from upstream of a small stream.
There were still a few horseflies, especially between 4 and 5, and some muddy sections. After 4, the path enters the woods; the route is perfect.
I preferred to retrace my steps, and in particular the descent is much less steep than that of the GR10.
It’s a lovely hike, long and challenging (I took far longer than expected); make sure you take enough water with you, and perhaps plan stops at the two huts, which can accommodate hikers.

A lovely walk with views of the mountain ranges and streams, but as mentioned, it’s very difficult to follow without a GPS track.
The first section through the woodland is pleasant, and the path is easy going. Then, as indicated, the path after the ‘3’ sign also zigzags through the scree, and there are plenty of muddy patches where you can easily sink in.
But the worst part is the horseflies that jump on you and bite you; I encountered them right up to Col 8.
I met the warden of the Quioulés hut, who explained how to find the start of the path to Col 8, but in the end I used my GPS.
From the pass, I think you can see the Rulhe refuge
Then, to reach the Rieutort de Gascous hut, by keeping well to the left, you can reach the footbridge crossing the stream. Before point 10, my GPS ran out of battery and so I lost my route, but the marker for the Massayre summit showed me the way.
The descent along the Calvière stream (left bank) isn’t fully marked on the ground, which is why it can sometimes be difficult to make progress.
Provided you’re well equipped, this walk remains enjoyable.
