The Étangs de Joclar circular, via the Refuge du Rhule

A hike in the heart of the Aston valley with four lakes to discover, passing through the Col de Jouclar, which forms the border between France and Andorra.
There are several options for this hike. I have chosen to present the most comprehensive version here, so that you can discover these circular lakes and enjoy a day's hiking. Of course, it can be done in two days, but I will discuss this option later.

Description of the walk

The starting point is at the Pla de las Peyres car park. To get there, follow the N20 to Tarascon sur Ariège, then continue towards Andorra. Once you have passed the village of Sinsat, turn right towards Les Cabannes / Aulos / Plateau de Beille. After this turn, drive through Aulos and continue towards Aston/Barrage de Laparan. Drive through Aston, following the signs for Barrage de Laparan (the road is well signposted). It will take you at least 30 minutes to drive from the Aston exit to the Laparan dam (not the first one, which is small, but the second one, which is huge). You can't miss the dam (which is just over 100 metres high). Once you have passed the dam, continue along the road until you can't go any further. For your information, the road is very bumpy from the dam onwards. However, I advise you to go to the end of the road to avoid extending the hike on an uninteresting trail. This will take you to the Pla de las Peyres car park (allow about 45 minutes between Aston and this car park). At the time of writing, the car park is being developed to accommodate an estimated 250 spaces.

(S/E) Plan de las Peyres car park: continue on foot until you come to a sign indicating the start of the hikes. Follow the road to the Refuge du Rulhe. The trail is very well marked and easy to follow, so you can't go wrong. After about 1 km, you will come to a fork in the road with a sign.

(1) At this point, turn left towards Refuge du Rulhe and start the short climb.

(2) You should soon see a large hut in front of you. You may find Mérens, a distinctive breed of horse, there. You can also see the Refuge du Rulhe in the distance. The climb is steep and long but not technically difficult to reach the Refuge du Rulhe.

(3) Leaving the refuge, follow the sign for Col de Joclar and begin the descent towards Estenol.
About 1 km after starting the descent from the refuge, you will come to a fork in the path.

(4) Continue left towards Col de Joclar. Shortly afterwards, you will arrive at the edge of a small, unnamed pond where there are a few tricky passages with stone platforms, but nothing too complicated. A few hundred metres further on, you will see the Étang de l'Estagnol.

(5) Take the time to admire this pond, wedged between Pic Negre de Joclar on your right (recognisable by its vertical peak, popular with climbers) and Pic de Rulhe on your left (the closest to the refuge), Pic de Fontargente and Pic de Joclar. Walk along the right side of the pond and begin the climb.

(6) Begin the steep (see elevation diagram) and rocky climb. You will also walk alongside a beautiful waterfall. It should also be noted that there are a few less obvious passages where you will need to use your hands, but this is nothing like rock climbing. You will come out at the Étang de Joclar.

(7) Walk along the left side of the lake, following the red and white markings. The trail climbs up to the Col de Joclar.

(8) Begin your return to Col de Juclar. First retrace your steps, descending towards Étang de Joclar (on the French side), then take the descent towards Estagnol, continuing on to the small, unnamed pond. You will reach the crossroads leading to the Rulhe refuge.

(4) Turn left and follow the yellow markings (the markings are not very obvious, but there are cairns everywhere to guide you).
Cross the path and after about 2km, you will find yourself back at the large hut at the foot of the climb to the Rulhe refuge.

(2) Continue downhill along the same route you took on the way up to reach the Pla de las Peyres car park (S/E).

Notes

(3) Refuge de Rulhe: After this climb, you may want to enjoy some food and drink. Please note that the refuge is open and staffed from the end of May to the end of September. For the rest of the year, I advise you to check the refuge's website for information.
Two-day option: There is also a shorter version of the hike, which involves sleeping at the refuge or camping nearby and finishing the hike the next day. If this is your plan, continue with the hike from this point onwards.
Apart from the Refuge du Rulhe (note: open from late May to late September), you will not find any water sources. There is very little shade on this hike. Bear this in mind so that you don't hike in the middle of the afternoon under the blazing sun. Also remember to wear good shoes, as the climb to Étang de Joclar is covered in large stones. I strongly advise against this hike if it is raining or has rained the day before. Finally, this hike should be avoided in the event of a thunderstorm.

Worth a visit

(3) Upon arrival at the Refuge du Rulhe: a beautiful view of the Estagnol, the unnamed lake and one of the Fontargente lakes. You also have the Pic de Rulhe in the foreground.
(7) Arrival at the Joclar lake: a superb view of the Pic Negre de Juclar.
(8) Arrival at the top of the Col de Juclar: a splendid 360° view of the three Joclar ponds and the Andorran/French peaks.
(8) Col de Joclar: this is not a spelling mistake; as you are on the border between France and Andorra, this pass has two names. On the Andorran side, you can admire the two Juclar lakes in the distance: the first is round (Estany Segon de Juclar) and the second stretches out into the distance (Estany Primer de Juclar). If you want to prolong the pleasure, you can descend to the bottom of the lakes and return to the Col de Juclar to continue the hike.

Hike completed at the end of August 2024, with excellent weather conditions.
Superb landscapes. Mainly on trails, with a slightly more difficult section on scree, but the path remains clearly visible.
Many thanks to the author of this hike.

A very pleasant discovery of the Aston Valley. No particular difficulties. The route is easy to follow, except for the section from the hut with the horses to the Rulhe refuge, which is a little harder to follow in the first part through the grass (nothing very marked).
It's really worth climbing up to the Joclar Pass, which offers a magnificent view of Andorra and its lakes.
You could consider returning via the Fontargentes lakes to round off this beautiful route.

A very beautiful hike with stunning views of the upper Aston Valley.
One small question mark is the route between the Rulhe refuge and the direct descent to the Garsan hut at the unnamed lake (the cairn marker is placed after the red cross at the end of the route and I did not see any yellow markers indicating the continuation).
The rocky climb to the Joclar lake is well marked and without obstacles, making it a "fairly easy climb".
I continued my hike with a visit to the Col de l'Albe (an additional 20 minutes without difficulty).
It was a pleasant hike, which took me 8½ hours, and I met six other hikers.

A very beautiful hike with no difficulty at all. I stopped at the Joclar Pond.
To start the hike, I parked at the first car park in Laparan and continued on foot (40 minutes) to the Las Peyres plateau. The road has been completely resurfaced. For the return journey from the Rhule refuge, I set off via the Col du Rieutord, passing through a variety of landscapes including hills, lakes and forests. Magnificent and completely easy.

A very beautiful hike.
I camped at Pla de las Peyre so I could set off early. (Departure at 6:45 a.m., refuge at 8:15 a.m., Col de Joclar at 9:30 a.m. ~approximately)
It's quite pleasant because when you leave early, you're in the shade for most of the hike (until stage 6).
The rhododendrons are in bloom and you can see lots of orchids throughout the valley.

The elevation profile on Geoportal indicates a difference in altitude of around 1,100 metres. (I don't have a GPS, so I couldn't check).

To return to Estagnol (4), there are three different paths at the pond's spillway: the left one leads to the Fontargente ponds, the right one leads back to the Rulhe refuge, and the third one descends into the valley: the return to the hut. I didn't see any yellow markings on this path, but it is clearly visible and marked with cairns.
