Bourges – Saint Martin Abbey – Plaimpied – Route No. 11 of the Tour de Bourges

Route No. 11. A connecting walk to the ‘Le Tour de Bourges’ route, along the left bank of the lake and its biotope observatory, through the low-lying alkaline marsh of the Val d’Auron. The old Berry Canal, which has unfortunately been filled in as far as the Etourneau lock, nevertheless makes for a lovely greenway. In Plaimpied, the 11th–12th-century Saint Martin’s Abbey Church is well worth a visit.

Notes

Note on access to the starting point: Car park at the Val d’Auron shopping centre at the head of the lake.
Esplanade Mendès France. Point 0 marker on the ground.

In wet or thawing conditions, the ground on the Chemin de l’Etourneau leading to the D31 becomes very sticky.
Crossing the ditch via the wooden footbridge on the Sente à Mimile path in Plaimpied is quite tricky for less experienced walkers.
The rest of the route presents no significant difficulties.

Between the Chemin des Coudres in Trouy Bourg and the Porte de Trouy roundabout, heavy traffic, combined with the low-angled sun which impairs drivers’ visibility, makes the D73 a dangerous road.

The Esplanade Mendès France features a fountain supplied with drinking water, which is very handy. This is a particularly pleasant route for bird photography enthusiasts (there are numerous migratory and resident birds at the lake).
The route through the villages of Plaimpied and Trouy follows the few paths spared by privatisation and the construction of the A71 and D400. The destruction of over 1,300 hectares of forest in the 1950s and the establishment of a quarry have further depleted the natural transport routes.

Worth a visit

The Val d’Auron lake was created in 1977, covering an area of 73 hectares with a circumference of 5.8 km. It is home to numerous species of migratory and resident birds.

(info 45). Berry Canal: built between 1811 and 1841, stretching 261 km in length. Decommissioned on 3 January 1955.

(info 43). Plaimpied-Givaudins: Saint Martin’s Abbey, a jewel of Romanesque art (1080). Capital depicting the Temptation of Christ, carved by the same artist as the one in Nazareth.
