Bourges–Saint-Florent-sur-Cher Viaduct – Route No. 09 of the Tour de Bourges

Link No. 09. Connecting walk to the ‘Le Tour de Bourges’ route, exploring a section of the Way of St James. Between La Chapelle and Morthomiers, the road is unfortunately the only link. The other access routes, including the one via the Roman road, have been destroyed, closed or are on private land. After Morthomiers, the route rejoins the Bourges–Argenton Roman road. The section crossing the Saint-Florent viaduct, part of the strategic Bourges–Issoudun line, offers a magnificent view of the Cher valley.

Notes

Note on access to the starting point (in Bourges):
Free car park at the Val d’Auron shopping centre at the head of the lake.
Esplanade Mendès France. Point 0 marker on the ground.

A considerable distance to bear in mind if you’re doing the whole route. Apart from a few bumpy and/or muddy sections, the paths are fairly easy to cycle on.

A few isolated sections in winter, but these are frequented by walkers and pilgrims on the Way of St James.

The Esplanade Mendès France has a fountain supplied with drinking water, which is very handy.
Apart from a few unavoidable stretches on road (where the Roman road has been stripped of its stones or destroyed), the route passes through large wooded areas. The magnificent St Florent viaduct, with its view over the Cher valley, awaits you.

Worth a visit

The Val d’Auron lake was created in 1977, covering an area of 73 hectares with a circumference of 5.8 km. It is home to numerous species of migratory and resident birds.

Hello, and thank you for taking the time to comment on the walk “Bourges–Saint-Florent-sur-Cher Viaduct – Route No. 09 of the Tour de Bourges”, posted on the Visorando website on 24 March 2015.
I’m sorry that my directions weren’t clear enough for you to find your way. Over the past six years, the route may have changed, particularly around the “A71/N151/D.107/La Chapelle” junction, an area undergoing significant development.
The latest edition of the IGN map (or Géoportail, which is more up to date) is a great help in minimising route errors. Deep in the woods, landmarks aren’t easy to spot.
I hope you won’t be left with too negative an impression of having wasted your time, especially if you were on foot.
Best regards.
Dinky 18.
