A short, easy walk suitable for families, offering the chance to explore the village of Martres-Tolosane and its surroundings, with a variety of landscapes and atmospheres. There are many quiet roads and a few tracks, but Lake Saint-Vidian and its park are a lovely spot for a picnic break. Best avoided in hot weather.

Description of the walk

In Martres-Tolosane, head towards Lake Saint-Vidian and park in its shaded car park.

(S/E) From the car park, head west towards the Saint-Vidian Fountain, go up the steps, then continue left, due west along Avenue de Saint-Vidian.

(1) Cross the bridge over the Garonne and continue along Avenue de Saint-Vidian.

(2) At the Fork in the road, turn left onto Chemin du Barrage.

(3) At the fork before the railway line, turn right onto Chemin de Restons until you reach a junction.

(4) Turn left, towards the town centre. Cross the level crossing, continue left onto Rue du Portail (D10), then join a boulevard.

(5) Martres-Tolosane Town Hall. Turn left then right to cross Boulevard de la Magdeleine, which circles the town centre, and enter the town centre. Pass the Church of Saint-Vidian, the Faience Museum, the large vicarage and the market hall.

(6) Turn left onto Rue du Donjon, cross the boulevard again and continue straight on along Rue du Matet for 50 metres.

(7) At Le Matet, turn left onto Chemin des Carriaces.

(8) At Château de Martres, turn right onto the D13f, crossing the Canal de Saint-Martory. After about 100 m, turn right onto Chemin Bellevue and continue along the track, following the canal. Cross the D10 and carry on straight ahead for about 400 m.

(9) Turn right, crossing the Canal de Saint-Martory again, and follow the Route de Saint-Picaud. Pass under the A64, then continue straight on until you reach the D83 (Route de Mondavezan)

(10) Turn right onto the Route de Mondavezan, towards the town centre. At the roundabout, turn right onto Rue Saint-Roche (D817) and rejoin the Boulevard de la Magdeleine.

(11) Turn left onto it towards the town hall and return to the junction you passed on the way there.

(5) Turn left and follow the route in the opposite direction to the outward journey until you reach a junction.

(4) Carry on straight ahead along Avenue Saint-Vidian for about 250 metres.

(12) At the fork in the road, turn left onto the road, cross a tributary of the Garonne via a road bridge, then turn right and then left to return to the car park (S/E).

Stay alert, as you will be walking on tarmac roads for much of the route, although there is not much traffic; I only came across one vehicle. However, beautiful paths and tracks await you, and the Ruisseau des Goutères stream is a sight to behold. The route is very well signposted, even if some points are hidden by dense vegetation.
