Circular route to the Source de la Loue from Mouthier-Haute-Pierre

The Source de la Loue is one of the most famous springs in the Jura. Located near Pontarlier, the river emerges from the rock through this enormous cave and flows through deep gorges before reaching the plain. This walk, starting from the charming village of Mouthier-Haute-Pierre, begins with an ascent to the Moine de la Vallée viewpoint. The route then generally descends to the Source de la Loue, which offers a refreshing break. The paths that follow are narrow, particularly vertiginous and technical, but this is the most beautiful part of the walk. After this section, which ends at the Aiguillons de Brasse, the path is less dangerous and alternates between ascents and descents to the Roche de Hautepierre viewpoint. From there, you tackle the final descent towards the village.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park on Rue des Guenbart in Mouthier-Haute-Pierre.

(S/E) From the car park, walk down the street and turn left at the first junction. Then keep left to cross the Loue and follow the concrete road that branches off to the right until you reach the end of it.

(1) Take the path on the left towards Le Moine de la Vallée. Pass a junction on the right, then another with two tracks overgrown on both sides. At the third Fork in the road, continue climbing straight ahead to reach a fourth junction. Leave the main track heading right and take the one on the left. Ignore a path coming from this side and proceed to a junction.

(2) Ignore the path on the right and continue straight ahead. Then take a sharp right-hand bend to reach a cleared section. Ignore the track on the left and, at the next bend, head up the left-hand side. You will reach a large crossroads.

(3) Head towards Moine de la Vallée on the right. On the road, turn right and reach the two viewing points located by the mast.

(4) Enjoy the view, then head back the way you came. At the house, turn left and return to the large crossroads.

(3) Take the path furthest to the right. At the junction, go straight ahead, ignoring the paths to the right and left. Ignore a path leading off to the right. The path runs through the forest and is generally flat. It leads out into a clearing.

(5) Ignore the path leading down opposite, and turn right. The path curves to the right, then takes a sharp left, and arrives at a first viewpoint overlooking the upper Loue valley.

(6) Continue along the path, then pass a second viewpoint, which you should walk past. At the Fork in the road, keep left. At the bend to the right, the path leaves the edge of the cliff and heads towards a track.

(7) Take this track on the left and ignore the next track branching off to the left to find a path a little further on, still on the left. Follow this path, which runs along the edge of the precipice. Pass a junction on the right and reach a meadow and a high-voltage power line. Go underneath it, then keep to the right and arrive at a large crossroads.

(8) Begin the descent at the Source de la Loue by turning left. Immediately afterwards, take the middle path. Ignore a path coming from behind. At the next Fork in the road, turn right before continuing downhill to the left and arriving at a wide path.

(9) Continue the descent to the left. Join the path descending to the right, then leave an overgrown track to continue on the path that starts to its right. Leave another overgrown track to the right and reach some steps: go down these and keep to the right to rejoin the D443. Take care on this road. Turn left to reach the restaurant "Au Chalet de la Loue".

(10) Take the wide concrete path that starts to the left of the restaurant and descends towards the Source de la Loue. Continue along this path until you reach the Maison de la Source. Pass this on your left and you will reach a footbridge offering a view of the spring.

(11) At the end of the footbridge, climb the stairs and continue along the path. Caution: this marks the start of a dangerous, vertiginous and technically challenging section stretching for several kilometres. Certain sections may therefore be frightening for those prone to vertigo. Follow this cliff-top path for several kilometres until you reach a small stream. Leave the path on the right and head left to reach the road.

(12) Turn right onto the road and follow it very carefully. After the bend, take the path that climbs to the left towards the Aiguillons de Brasse. This section is also narrow and vertiginous, as well as being slippery: so take care. Towards the end, the path winds around a few bends. At one of the bends, leave the path on the right and you will then reach the Aiguillons viewpoint.

(13) Continue along the path that starts opposite the viewpoint. The path is then flat, passes under a power line, and arrives at a Fork in the road at Les Vouilles.

(14) Head left, downhill, onto a track that winds and crosses Notre-Dame des Vouilles.

(15) Continue along the track, then turn right at the next Fork in the road. After an initial climb, the path descends before crossing a small stream. Ignore the junctions to the right and left and keep straight ahead until you reach the meadow. Once there, look out for the wooden footbridge on the other side. Leave the track and head towards it, crossing over to reach a Fork in the road.

(16) Ignore the path (dangerous, steep and slippery) on the left and continue to the right. Between two stretches of woodland, the path runs alongside meadows. At the end of the path, by a cross, turn left twice to follow Rue Émile Longchampt to the Church of Saint-Claude and its war memorial.

(17) Head up to the right to pass in front of the church. On Route des Cerisiers, turn left before taking Chemin du Belvédère to the right. At the end, just before the cemetery, turn off onto the path leading up to the left via some steps. This takes you to the Roche de Hauteville, with its benches and orientation table. Take particular care as there is a drop-off.

(18) Continue downhill along the path. The path then enters the forest and crosses a track, which you should follow to the left until you reach a road.

(19) Head down this road to the right and follow the bend to reach a junction. Turn right and you’ll come to another crossroads.

(20) Keep going downhill to the left. At the road, first turn left then right before rejoining it further down.

(21) Continue along the track to the left, which joins the Chemin des Carres. When you reach the Route de Hautepierre, turn left, then left again at the next Fork in the road to follow Rue Pavée to the church.

(22) Continue along the same street and, once you reach its end on the Route des Gorges de Nouailles, turn left, then immediately right onto Rue Ernest Reyer. At the left-hand bend, take the small path on the right. At the end, turn left and you’ll reach the car park (S/E).
