The starting point is at the beginning of Rue Route Neuve. Parking is available on the street.
(S/E) Take a path that branches off to the left, in the bend, almost opposite the crossroads, and comes out near a crossroads.
(1) Take the street opposite: Rue du Charroi. Follow this street uphill and it will become Chemin de Pinay after passing under a power line. Ignore the streets and driveways leading off Chemin de Pinay on either side.
(2) When Chemin de Pinay branches off to the right, continue along the path that leads into the woods. Ignore the paths that branch off to the left or right. After the Fontaine aux Salamandres (Salamander Fountain) - signposted "La Fontaine" - follow the signs for "Corniche". After a sharp right turn, the path passes near some old quarries. This section is protected by railings.
(3) At the forest road - signposted "Corniche" - turn left towards "Hameau du Mont Thou".
Follow the forest road until you reach a crossroads with a small road. Turn right onto the road that climbs uphill and follow it until the next crossroads.
(4) When you reach an electrical transformer, turn right, then left to return above the transformer - signposted "Hameau du Mont Thou". Take the path that climbs up to the right opposite the transformer towards "La Caborne d'Antoine". Before turning left, you will see an old wash house.
At the crossroads, signposted "Caborne d'Antoine", turn right towards "Grandes Terres".
Take the time to visit the restored drystone shelter (drystone shelters) then continue on the path towards "Grandes Terres".
This path joins an old road closed to traffic, marked "Grandes Terres", which you should follow to the right towards "Trêves du Loup".
(5) At the crossroads, take the small road towards Fortin du Mont Thou and follow it for about 400 metres. Take the small path on the right that crosses an open space. Follow it to the signpost "Dent du Loup". Turn left to go to Mont Thou.
(6) Enjoy the beautiful view of the Saône valley and the Ain plain, and more if the weather permits. Take the time to walk along the rocky path.
To continue the hike, go back down to the "Dent du Loup" crossroads.
At the Dent du Loup intersection, turn left and immediately right onto the path that leads to the edge of the forest. Head left and follow the edge of the forest for about 150 metres. Then enter the woods.
After about 300 metres, follow the path on the right and at the next crossroads, turn left and continue along this path for 200 metres, ignoring the first path that branches off to the right.
Continue to the next crossroads.
(7) Turn right to reach the road. Cross it and take the small path that descends into the forest in the hollow of the valley. The start of this path is somewhat hidden by vegetation.See photo "point 7".
Over a few dozen metres, the vegetation tries to reclaim the path.
Follow the path down into the valley, winding between or under trees that have fallen during previous storms.
Forty metres before a road, take the path that branches off to the right opposite the gate to a water tower. Follow this path for about 500 metres, ignoring a small path that comes up on the right.
At the crossroads - signposted "Pelossey" - turn left towards "Eaux vives".
This path descends towards the Saône, passing various properties, and joins a road.
(8) Follow the road for a few metres and, in the bend, take the path that descends parallel to a dead-end road.
This path joins a road which you follow downhill. On this descent, you can see the Château de La Rochetaillée on the other side of the Saône valley.
At the next crossroads, turn right to return to the starting point (S/E).
