Park at the Saint-Romain cemetery either in front along the path or at the back.
(S/E) Take Chemin du Petit Mont Cindre, which turns into a hairpin bend, and join the Tour intérieur des Monts d'Or trail on the right.
(1) Above Fouillonaz, follow the yellow markings for the Grand Tour des Monts d'Or for 400 metres. Follow the double yellow markings on the right, then take a sharp left turn along the field, following the Chemin des Cattonnières.
(2) At the crossroads at the end of Chemin des Gorgerattes, turn right and go up Chemin de Gorgerat.
(3) At La Fréta, follow the bend in the D92 and take the Sentier des Rapaces opposite for 950m.
(4) Follow the D92, then take the path on the side for 100 metres. Turn left, cross the road and descend to Pierre Blanche.
(5) At the crossroads, turn right, ignore the first street on the left and continue along Rue de la Jardinière, then turn right onto Chemin de la Roche for 150 metres. Turn left for 50 metres.
(6) Turn right onto Chemin des Vignes, continue straight ahead, ignoring the paths on the right and left. Cross a street (Chemin des Gorges) and continue along the path opposite.
(7) Turn right onto Rue de la Roche, then turn left. Walk up between the houses along Sentier du Quartier Chinois to reach Chemin de Vide Pot.
(8) Follow this path on the right.
(9) At the junction with Chemin du Belvédère, turn left and join the Tour de Saint-Fortunat marked in pale blue. Follow the D73 for 150 metres and turn right onto Chemin de Fontaine Poivre. Take the D73 on the right and pass under the power line.
(10) Turn left towards La Torchetière: marked with two yellow dots. Walk down past the sculptor's house and join the road. Continue for 150m to Chemin de la Torchetière. Turn left and follow the road for 100m to the end, then turn right and follow the road for 150m. At the junction with Route de Saint-Didier, turn left. Stay on this road for about 600m.
(11) At Chemin de la Garenne, turn right onto Chemin de la Réserve and follow the yellow markings for about 1 km. The path makes a sharp left turn. Continue for 300 m to reach the road. Turn right for 100 metres, then left for 150 metres and finally right onto a path. Follow this path for 400 metres to reach Chemin du Vallon.
Climb up to the Saint-Didier road. Turn right for 50 metres, then left towards La Châtaignière. Continue for 200 metres on the road, 200 metres on the path, then 300 metres on the road. At the junction with Impasse de la Chataignière, turn right to reach the D92 100 metres further on.
(12) Follow the dark blue marked Tour de Limonest route to the left (towards Mont-Verdun).
Turn left and continue for 500 metres towards Château de la Barollière, then turn left for 200 metres and take a sharp right turn onto Route du Mont-Verdun. Climb up to the first bend on the right. Straight ahead is the Barolière lime kiln.
Take the forest path that crosses the road four times. Continue past the clay pigeon shooting range and follow the road to the Batterie des Carrières.
(13) 100m further on, leave the Tour de Limonest on your right and enter the woods. 400m further on, join the Tour de Chasselay marked in dark blue. Continue straight on towards the Gite de la Glande, then join the road 200m further on. Turn left to reach the Glande lime kiln, 200m on the left.
(14) Turn around to find the path that joins the D92, which you should follow to the entrance of the military base. There is a picnic area on the left.
Turn left and continue along the path that avoids the main road for about 600 metres. At the junction with the road, leave the Chemin de Le Py on your right, continue straight on for 50 metres towards the quarry, then turn left onto the path through the woods and follow it for about 1.5 kilometres.
At the junction with the road, turn right for 100 metres, then right again for 250 metres. At the intersection with Chemin des Places, continue straight on Chemin de la Croix Rampau to reach the entrance to the village of Poleymieux.
(15) At the crossroads 50 metres after the Risler Tower, continue straight ahead for 100 metres. Pass Chemin de l'Ancienne Église and continue left for 50 metres to descend Chemin de la Péronière, then Chemin de Planchamp, continuing towards Poleymieux church. At the bottom of Chemin de la Péronière, cross Chemin du Nerbey towards the church square.
(16) Behind the church, to the right of the square, descend via a small steep path towards the hamlet of La Rivière.
At the junction with the small road, turn right and descend for 150 metres to the D73. Cross the departmental road and climb back up towards the La Roche neighbourhood.
Go straight up for 100 metres, then turn left onto Route de la Roche for 50 metres. Turn right onto a small path that turns left then right to reach La Roche. Continue straight ahead for 200 metres and, after the houses, turn left onto Chemin des Mésanges, which climbs up to Croix Vitaize.
(17) At the cross, cross the main road and turn left at a 45° angle. You will rejoin the Tour Intérieur, marked with double yellow dots. Follow the signs for Mont Thou and Saint-Romain-au-Mont d'Or along a small path (also marked in red) overlooking the river valley and offering beautiful views of Poleymieux and Mont Verdun. Continue for 800 metres until you reach the fork towards Saint-Romain.
(18) Do not continue straight on towards Mont Thou but turn left and then, 750 metres further on, left again towards Saint-Romain. Please note that you are leaving the Tour Intérieur as this section is very slippery in winter.
(19) Cross the main road towards the car park and take the dirt track on the right. Continue for 500 metres. You will rejoin the Tour Intérieur route, marked with two yellow dots.
(20) Turn right and descend for about 500 metres. At the three-way junction, turn left and then left again 100 metres further on to reach Chanelette, where you will join the Tour de Saint-Romain, marked in pale blue. Turn right, cross the hamlet of Salagon and continue on the Mont Thou road.
At the first left-hand bend, leave the road and take the path on the right, which makes a 90° left turn, crosses the Mont Thou road and descends towards Les Séguines. At the crossroads, turn right and then left and take the path that climbs between the houses to join the Chemin du Petit Mont Cindre. Turn left towards the Saint-Romain cemetery (S/E).
these shortcuts are doable but a bit steep.
For your information, we got lost at signpost 11 and ended up in fields instead of finding the Vallon path. Also, the yellow markings are very noticeable, but we didn't see the pale blue and dark blue ones...
