Description of the walk

Start from the car park on Rue de la République, near the Demeure du Chaos, which you can visit before or after the walk.

(S/E) Head towards the town hall and turn left just after it. Climb up to the Route de Collonges (D89) after crossing Rue de la Bessée. Take this road on the left and head towards house no. 12.

(1) Cross the road carefully and take the path just before the modern house, continuing to climb. When you reach the Aquaria gate, follow the path on the right (facing the gate). Ignore a path branching off to the right and continue through the woodland. The path turns right onto a small ledge and reaches a fork. Take the right-hand path, which runs almost level.

(2) Turn onto the small path that climbs before the bench. Walk alongside a low wall, then join a path on the left to reach some houses.

(3) Turn right onto the tarmac road and reach the Route du Mont Cindre. Take the path opposite and follow the Sentier des Rapaces. Join the track and cross it carefully.

(4) After the dog training centre, take the path downhill. When you reach the road, take the sharp right-hand bend and head back uphill.

(5) At the first junction, head left towards Grandes Terres. You’ll come to a meadow with an old drystone shelter (drystone hut) in the distance. Walk past the drystone shelter and follow the wall as it climbs gently. The golden stone walls are particularly well-preserved, no doubt because they are not along busy paths. Make your way through the dense vegetation to find the marked path (stay as close as possible to the GPS route). Once you’ve found the path, turn right and continue a short way to reach an open field offering a magnificent view overlooking Lyon (even Fourvière on its rocky outcrop looks tiny to the right). Head straight on, taking the path with your back to the fields. Follow the Route des Crêtes and reach a five-way junction.

(6) Cross the road and follow the path downhill towards Grandes Terres-Republique.

(7) At the first junction, turn left towards Caborne d'Antoine.

(8) At the fork, turn left towards Hameau du Mont Thou. When you reach the tarmac, walk a few metres to the left then to the right. At the cross, go down Chemin de Salagon. At the end of this, turn left and join a footpath. Follow it straight on.

(9) At the Tupoly sign, follow the path down to the right. Be careful, the slope is quite steep. Continue straight on all the way until you reach Rue Paupière, where you turn right.

(10) At the crossroads, cross over and take the path between the walls to the right of the wayside shrine. At the end, turn left and head for the car park (S/E).

A pleasant route when it's hot, as there is plenty of shade under the trees. However, there aren't many scenic views along the way (you can't have everything).

However, a small section of the trail is no longer in good condition because the walls had to be rebuilt (a long time ago...) and there are no longer any visible traces.
You have to improvise using the nearby tracks to find the right route. (It's not a big deal, but it's worth knowing).

I was expecting more scenery, but we spend a lot of time in the woods, which are very dense at the end of June, so in the end you don’t see much – just the occasional glimpse through a gap. So we added the climb up Mont Thou to get a better view.
There was a tricky bit on the drystone shelter side; I think the route needs reviewing. Some low walls had been rebuilt, so we had to leave the path and find other tracks to catch up with it further on.

A really lovely walk, with some stunning views, though it’s a bit of a climb at the start. There are plenty of alternative routes to choose from. The first 300 metres in St Romain are a bit different as they’re less in the countryside.
