Rapale and Pieve circular loop

Created on the initiative of the municipalities of Rapale, Pieve and Sorio, the ‘Between the Profane and the Sacred’ route passes through these three beautiful villages of the Upper Nebbiu, which have showcased and preserved a heritage that is a must-see.
Communal footpaths, mule tracks, Romanesque chapels, menhir statues, a church with an off-centre bell tower, plus a route through chestnut and oak woods, making it suitable for walking in all seasons.
This description is not a copy-and-paste of the certified route but a variation split into two circular loops that follow the same routes. The idea is to make the route more accessible by reducing the distance and duration, thus allowing more time to explore the heritage. This is therefore the first circular loop.

Description of the walk

Head to the village of Rapale in the Nebbiu region via the Santo Stefano Pass and the D62.
Park in the church square.

Markings: yellow paint and cairns
Signage: wooden sign ‘Between the Profane and the Sacred – Pieve – Rapale’.
Directions in the villages and/or follow the IGN map or the app.

(S/E) Head towards the D62, cross it and take the road opposite called Garataccia.

(1) Turn left at the bottom of the street. At the junction 50 m further on, continue right towards E Querciole. Pass the last houses in the village and take the path leading downhill. At the lowest point, cross a stream then climb for about 250 m.

(2) A few dozen metres from the junction with the road known as Strada di a Piaghja, take the path on the left signposted Canneto. At the end, go through a gate and follow Carrughju di Sarrasca to the right. At the junction, head straight up Strada di a Piaghja for about 700 m, ignoring a dead-end street on the right.

(3) Turn right onto the path which runs alongside the houses further on. At the end of the path, enter the narrow streets of the village of Pieve.

(4) Follow Chjassacciu a Sulana to reach and cross the D62. Then turn right towards the menhir statues, E Stantare. Go round the church on the left.

(5) Behind the church, turn right onto Strada di a Casalina and continue to the end of the cemetery fence.

(6) Go through a gate and follow the path to the junction with a track; follow this track uphill to the right for about 200 m.

(7) At the bend, take the balcony path on the left until you reach the junction for the Chapel of San Cesario.

(8) Turn right and head towards the chapel.

(9) Leave the chapel grounds and return to the junction.

(8) Turn right and head down towards Rapale via Chjassu di San Cesario.

(10) Go through a final gate, follow the cemetery fence and take Strada di u Castagnetu to reach the church square (S/E).

A very beautiful hike that takes you along varied paths and offers superb panoramic views. Don't miss out on the detour to the chapel, a beautiful monument in the middle of the woods.
We were unable to park in the church square, but on the way back we noticed a fairly large car park behind the church (and not in front, as we had thought).

A very pretty, mostly shaded hike in July. The only downside was a very short stretch on asphalt, but the road was very quiet, and the beauty of the landscape quickly made up for it.
We recommend this hike
