Loop via the Canal du Centre and the RCEA from Saint-Vincent-Bragny

Magnificent landscape without too much elevation gain. Very pleasant hike as there is little traffic, even on the roads. Please note: there are no water sources for 35 km. You will need to bring supplies for this long, pleasant route along the water's edge in the forest and along the RCEA. You can stop at a bakery about halfway along the route in Paray-le-Monial.

Description of the walk

Departure from the Salle des Fêtes in Saint-Vincent-Bragny, parking available.

(S/E) When leaving the car park, take the street on the right.

(1) At the first crossroads, turn right onto the road.

(2) About 500 m further on, take a path on the left. Cross a large forest, continuing straight ahead (west).

(3) Stay on the path that veers south-west. Leave the forest further on, still on the same path. Cross a small road and continue on the path opposite.

(4) Turn right at the fork (barbed wire fence). Return to the tarmac road and continue straight ahead (west-southwest).

(5) Cross a road and continue straight ahead on a dirt track. After 200 m, turn right. Pass in front of a horse farm and continue to the junction with the Vigny road (D994).

(6) Follow it to the left, cross the D994 carefully to reach the Rigole de l'Arroux and cross it. The Rigole de l'Arroux is a small canal (feeding the Canal du Centre) which was used to supply the Gueugnon forges. This canal dates from 1869.

(7) Turn left to follow the canal on your left and rejoin the D994.

(8) Pass underneath via a small footbridge. Continue along the canal, which is now on your right. Take the canal bridge over the Bourbince and you will immediately reach the edge of the Canal du Cantre.

(9) Turn left, heading east, to follow the canal along the Greenway: be careful, there are many bicycles during the summer season.

(10) Pass under the Route Centre Europe Atlantique (RCEA) A79 motorway. Continue straight ahead on the Greenway.

(11) Leave the Greenway and turn left (D352) to enter Paray-le-Monial. Shortly afterwards, you will pass a bakery.

(12) Turn left at the traffic lights. After 150 metres, turn right after the municipal warehouse. Continue straight ahead through the residential area.

(13) Cross the road and continue straight ahead towards the industrial estate.

(14) Go around the roundabout on the right and head towards Grande Bruyère. At the next roundabout, turn right towards the aerodrome.

(15) At the crossroads, turn left and drive along the aerodrome on your right.

(16) Shortly before the bridge over the RCEA, enter a field on the right: close the gate behind you.

(17) At the end of the road, at the crossroads of dirt roads, take the left one.

(18) At the end of this small path, turn right and walk along the field. Climb over the fence and continue straight ahead.

(19) Pass under the RCEA a second time, follow the path along the motorway on your left, then continue on the road that branches off from it.

(20) About 200 metres after the house, turn right onto the dirt track and do not cross back over the RCEA. The track continues along the motorway on your left.

(21) Pass under the RCEA a third time. On the other side, take the road on the right.

(22) At the dirt road, turn left towards the telephone relay station.

(23) After the relay, keep left and enter the woods. Stay on this path, heading south-west then north-west.

(24) At the end of this path, turn right. Pass in front of the beautiful residence at the end of Chemin Maréchal, take the road on the left and continue to the D352 road, crossing the Oudrache.

(25) Follow the D352 to the right.

(26) Turn left onto a dirt track, which is Chemin de l'Échat.

(27) At the end of this road, turn left towards Chassagne Castle. Pass in front of it without entering the grounds, as it is private property. At the end of the castle road, follow the road to the left.

(28) Take the first small tarmac road on the right. At the end of this road, you will come back to the crossroads where you started the walk.

(1) Turn right to return to the Salle des Fêtes car park (S/E).
