Circular route via the Treh farmhouse inn and Trehkopf from Markstein.

Starting from the first car park at the entrance to the Markstein resort, in the triangle formed by the D430, D731 and Route des Crêtes (closed in winter), the route follows forest trails and paths. Part of the route runs alongside ski slopes and crosses beautiful wooded areas.
You will pass above the Markstein farmhouse inn, visible below. The trail then continues through a pleasant coniferous forest before reaching the Treh farmhouse inn, an iconic landmark in the area.
From this inn, the climb becomes steeper towards Trehkopf. The ascent, short but dynamic, leads to an altitude of over 1,200 metres. At the summit, your efforts are richly rewarded with a generous panorama of the Vosges mountains. On a clear day, the view extends even further, revealing the Alps on the horizon.

Description of the walk

Car park located at the start of the resort (coming from Lac de la Lauch) at the intersection of the D430A and D731.

(S/E) Head southwest to see the "Raquettes et ski de fond" (Snowshoeing and Cross-Country Skiing) information and welcome signs, cross the road to pass above the Ferme-auberge du Markstein. The path approaches the edge of the forest and then comes to a crossroads just before the Chalet-refuge des Amis des Vosges.

Red-white-red rectangle markings

(1) Turn left and descend towards the forest. The route is also marked as snowshoe route R6 by the resort. The route crosses the woods and joins a junction with a forest road that leads to the chalet of the Association des Amis des Vosges Mulhouse.

(2) Cross over to continue straight ahead and descend slightly into the woods. At the next junction, take the road on the left to the Ferme-auberge du Treh (closed in winter).

(3) Pass the farmhouse inn and take the path that climbs to the right towards the road. Cross the road (with caution, as there is little traffic when snowy) and take the path that climbs opposite. Continue climbing, ignoring the paths on the left and right, until you reach the junction with the D430 (Route des Crêtes).

Not marked

(4) Just before this, turn right and follow the purple markers. Climb, following the markers on your right, to the summit of Trekopf and the crossroads that follows.

(5) Turn left onto a path lined with fences until you reach the next crossroads. Follow the stakes to the right along a sloping path that joins a wide path in the trees.

Red-white-red rectangle markings

(6) Continue straight downhill to the D27 road. Leave the markings on your left.

Not marked

(7) Cross the road with caution. It is usually closed (depending on snow conditions) to rejoin the outward route in the opposite direction and return to the car park on the D430 (S/E).
