Access by car via the D430 from Guebwiller: the road is not cleared of snow and becomes very slippery from around 800 m. The starting point is at the car park of the Markstein farmhouse inn between the D431 and D430. This car park is also known as Triangle.
Marked route (R3, Red, Purple sign)
(S/E) Walk west along the car park and the road towards the toboggan run, along the D27, to find the start of a Club Vosgien trail marked with a red/white/red rectangle. The R3 snowshoe trail marker is also visible. It is called the Route des Auberges (see practical information).
(1) Take this trail, which descends to the left towards the Treh farmhouse inn. Pass close to the chalet of the Association des Amis des Vosges de Mulhouse before reaching the Treh farmhouse inn. Take time to admire the valley below and the various peaks.
(2) After the Treh farmhouse inn, pass either below the inn or between the two buildings to continue on the R3 snowshoe trail. The self-service water point is located between the two buildings. Following the same markers, the route climbs to the level of the road (D27 closed to traffic in winter).
(3) Cross it (watch out for skiers) and continue on the trail that goes around the summit of Trehkopf to the north to reach the Route des Crêtes.
(4) Cross it and continue on the Steinlebach trail, which leads to thethird inn of the same name as the trail. A large sign announces it at the edge of the Route des Crêtes.
Pass in front of a chalet, the Refuge du Point, where there is a bench. Continue downhill to reach the Steinlebach farmhouse inn.
(5) Opposite the inn, continue on your right on the R3 route towards the slopes. First descend tothe second holly bush.
(6) Continue downhill to the left towards the forest. There is a large sign indicating the direction of the Lac de la Lauch car park. The route curves to the right, skirting the technical buildings of the ski lifts, and arrives at the edge of the D430 road. Continue, keeping the road on your left, and curve to the right to arrive at a wetland area, a spring and the Murbach stream.
(7) Be careful when crossing it; it is best to wear waterproof shoes or take long strides.
From the Murbach stream, continue the ascent. Pass a wooden staircase tower on your left (traces of an old ski jump, abandoned since the Second World War), with a concrete structure under which the path leads (built in 1954).
At the junction with the Blue Triangle marked trail, turn right for about 100 metres.
(8) Leave the Blue Triangle trail and continue left, following the R3 route markings. After a right turn, pass near the ski jump. The route remains in the forest and runs alongside the ski slopes. (See practical information).
At the end of this climb, take a cross-country ski trail where you are instructed to keep to the right and then to the left so as not to disturb the skiers, who have priority on these trails. Then turn completely left and head towards the road and the car park (S/E).
