Snowshoe tour in the Mauselaine ski area

A lovely winter snowshoe hike, a circular route around the Mauselaine ski area, above Gérardmer. Perfectly signposted with numbers (in our case, follow No. 1), with yellow signs and arrows to indicate the direction.

Description of the walk

Start on the right-hand side of the large car park (if you are at the bottom of the Mauselaine ski area, looking south).

(S/E) Head up to the right of the Pré Didier ropeway and the Tremplin ski lift. After about 200 m, you’ll reach a wide path. Turn right and continue the gentle, long climb, which starts with a winding path and joins the 17 km Forest Road.

Signpost No. 1

(1) Turn sharply left, following the signposting. When the path meets the GR®533 (marked with a Green Rectangle), turn right onto the Chemin de Derrière-le-Haut. Continue to the next junction.

(2) At the junction, leave the GR®, ignore the path on the right, and take the path on the left, the Route forestière de la Fontaine Gourrier. At the next Fork in the road, keep right and continue to the next crossroads.

(3) Turn right onto Chemin Forestier de la Cavaille; you will pass below an isolated chalet, continue to the Auberge de Grouvelin, at the end of the Téléskis des Hêtres.

(4) Turn left and walk past the inn’s terrace, heading due east. You are now on the Circuit de Grouvelin (GR®533) until the junction about 500 m further on.

(5) Leave the GR® and turn left, heading northwards, to the right of the ski runs and skirting the forest. Keep following signpost No. 1. On this section, the path narrows. At the top you’ll come to a signposted track; continue northwards down a steep descent (take care) and you’ll reach a wider track – this is once again the Route des Dix-Sept Kilomètres.

(6) Turn right and follow it for about 1 km, staying on the contour line. When the track turns westwards, at elevation 1036, a path crosses the track.

(7) Leave the forest track and take this path on the left. Head down towards the south-west, through the woods (take care if it’s icy). Cross the GR®5 twice and arrive at La Chaume Francis.

(8) With your back to the self-service restaurant, head back into the woods along a path that crosses a ski run (take care) and continue north-west to the Pré-Lynx ski lifts.

(9) Behind the ski lifts, you’ll come to a pond (pumping station). Go round it on the left and, after a few dozen metres, you’ll reach a junction with a path that heads uphill to the left.

(10) Turn sharply left and begin a lovely, challenging climb that takes you to the other end of the car park where you started. Cross the car park lengthways towards the west and return to your starting point (S/E).

Nice route, but be careful after point 7; the path turns into a small stream. The descent is quite steep.
Be careful with the listed refreshment points: the Gouvelin inn is permanently closed and the others are also closed during the off-season.

Hello,
Snowshoeing yesterday, beautiful weather, sunny, which is causing the snow to melt quickly.
I would like to report significant difficulties currently from point no. 8, the start of the Chaume
Francis to the finish. The descent is dangerous because the little snow that remains is icy, so you have to take off your snowshoes and walk in the small stream. Once down at point 10, the path climbs up to the La Mauselaine car park, and there is also danger there due to the ice. We therefore continued our route along the small stream, near the chalets, then turned left at the intersection and climbed up, continuing towards a dead end, still on the left. Above the last house, we entered the meadows towards a small carriage road. From there, you have a breathtaking view of Lake Gerardmer. Continue along this path, passing several beautiful large chalets, and at the end of this road you will finally arrive at the top of the resort car park. Allow about half an hour extra.

Please note that due to lack of snow and warming temperatures, the trail becomes virtually impassable after descending from Chaume Francis. The path turns into a ravine-like stream and the descent is dangerous, requiring you to walk through water, ice, mud and rolling stones. The same applies to the climb back up after the pumping station to reach the car park.
After Chaume Francis, do not descend to the right but climb slightly to the left and continue on the path that passes above the Lynx meadow ski lift and leads to the station.
After point 5, continue climbing for 10 minutes on your left to enjoy the 360° view from the Tête du Grouvelin orientation table, then retrace your steps to continue the route.
