Description of the walk

You can park at the foot of the Arundel Tower, except on market days.

(S/E) Head north along the channel.

(1) Turn right, continuing to follow the channel.

(2) Turn left at the small roundabout. Continue for about 150 m, go through the tunnel and then cross the car park to the left.

(3) Turn right onto the small tarmac road, then turn right towards the stadium. Once opposite the large sports hall, take the road on the left.

(4) After passing through the stadium gates, turn right onto the gravel path. Continue along this path for about one and a half kilometres.

(5) Turn left onto the gravel track. When you reach the road, turn right and follow it for about 50 metres, then turn left onto Impasse de l’Escadre.

(6) Turn right onto the path running alongside the Vélodyssée; you can now follow the orange “Vélodyssée” signs.

(7) Cross the A-road to take the bridge in front of you, then turn left after crossing it.

(8) Take the path on the left with a hairpin bend.

(9) Take the bridge on the left, then turn immediately right. Continue to follow the signs for “Vélodyssée” and “Vendée Vélo”.

(10) Take the tarmac road on the left; at the end of it, turn left, then 50 m further on, turn left again.

(11) Cross the road. Opposite, take the track that runs alongside the road towards Sauveterre, ignoring the “Vélodyssée” signs.

(12) Once you reach the beach access point, take the dune path on the left; make sure you take the marked and signposted path. Follow it for around 5 km; most of the time it is also possible to walk along the beach; however, be careful of the tides.

(13) Continue along the road/car park. When you reach the crossroads, follow the footpath that runs alongside the sea.

(14) At the car park entrance and the bike racks, take the dune path slightly to the right; make sure you take the marked path. Continue through the dunes, always taking the path closest to the beach.

(15) Head up to the left, then take the street on the right.

(16) Take the pavement on the sea side to follow the coastal path. Continue straight on until you return to your starting point (S/E).

A lovely walk, but the paths leading back from Sauveterre to L'Aubraie are no longer accessible in the dunes.

I went on this walk in early August on a lovely day.
To avoid driving into Les Sables d’Olonne, I parked at the northern end of the walk, in Sauveterre, at point 11, where there is a car park (“Parking de la Colonie”) from which shuttle buses run to the beach. Between point 11 and point 12, there are also lay-bys along the road where you can park.
I did the walk in reverse (11, 10, 9...) and so started with the beautiful marshes in the morning. There were other walkers and cyclists, but not too many; the atmosphere remained peaceful.
I arrived in the town (La Chaume) at lunchtime: plenty of cafés and restaurants were open, so there’s no real need to pack a picnic.
In the afternoon, I did the second part, along the coast. The section through the dunes can be a bit more tiring for those who aren’t used to walking in the sand, but if you take your time, it’s very pleasant. It’s quiet and the views are lovely.

A fantastic, very interesting walk, but best avoided during the peak season (June to September)... there are too many cyclists on half the route. Also not recommended for those who don’t like walking on sand.

Hello, hikers!
So I’m the first to give my thoughts on this hike 😁

I’m going to split it into two parts: the first 10 kilometres, which take you through a bit of town, the marshes and the forest…
Then the last 10 kilometres after reaching the sea…

So the first part is well signposted as you have to follow an established path for pedestrians and cyclists…
Perhaps it’s the season, but there really were a huge number of bikes, and it was sometimes a bit of a nuisance when hiking in a group, as you have to step aside every time a bike comes past… otherwise, in terms of scenery for this first part, the marshes and the forest section are lovely. We just had a bit of trouble finding our way to the car park we had to cross at the start…

For the second part, once we reached the sea, we took the dune path and personally (we’re not exactly expert hikers) it wasn’t easy at all – the sand is quite deep, so walking was quite a struggle with all the ups and downs (admittedly not very steep, but when your foot sinks in with every step, it’s no walk in the park).
As the tide was on our side, we ended up walking the stretch along the beach… the scenery is magnificent and the ground is firmer, so easier to walk on 🥾😁

Generally speaking, the route is fairly easy to follow, but we still got a bit lost (not by much) several times…

A pleasant hike for adults and, depending on the season, well worth a visit, but in summer (when it’s not too hot) it’s lovely!

Thanks to the organiser for their work
