Circular route between Avot and Salives

A lovely walk around one of the four sources of the River Tille, taking in significant medieval remains in the villages of Le Meix, Salives and Barjon.

(S/E) Follow Rue de Travot (D19), which forms part of theGR®7, towards Barjon and Salives. Keep to the right at the junction, staying on the D19, and pass the wash house on your left.

(1) Leave the road and turn left onto the GR®-marked path.

(2) Turn left and head due south to the junction at the bottom of the valley.

(3) Leave theGR®7by taking the path on the right. Continue through the Combe de la Prêle and keep going straight on to reach the D19. Turn left and walk carefully alongside it for about a hundred metres.

(4) Take the path on the left, which runs alongside the Côte des Vêvres and then joins the D120. View of Barjon Castle. Turn left towards Le Meix, pass the town hall, and negotiate the bend to the right.

(5) Head down to the right past the church, go round the castle and head up to the right towards the Plain de Barges.

(6) Carry on straight ahead to head back down to Salives.

(7) Cross the bridge over the Tille and head back up the other side. You’ll come out onto a road; follow it to the left for a few dozen metres.

(8) At the entrance to the village, head down to the left along the path running alongside the outer ramparts. At the junction with Rue de la Bordé, turn right twice and head for the washhouse beneath the church, from where you can see the source of the Tille.

(9) Head back up to the left of the washhouse along the grassy path at the foot of the rocks, known as Rue de la Rochotte, then head right up into the upper part of the village until you reach the “l’Abreuvoir” theatre. Cross the D19 and head for the Promenade des Remparts via the steps behind the theatre. Then turn right onto the rampart walk, cross the D19d again, and continue until you reach it one last time, following the ramparts all the way.

(8) Turn left, then left again to head up the Chemin de la Magdeleine. Walk through the hamlet of Montarmet.

(10) Turn right, then turn left 150 m further on. Head due east towards the valley to reach the Volgrain fountain.

(11) Follow the stream bed until you emerge from the woods, then follow the valley downstream to Barjon Bas.

(12) At the foot of the castle, head up to the left along a steep path. You’ll come out onto a street; follow it to the left as far as the church and the town hall.

(13) Turn right onto Rue du Grand Jardin and emerge onto Grande Rue. Turn right again, then turn left onto Rue de Charmot to leave the village.

(14) Continue to the right and go round the valley home to the Tille de Barjon.

(15) Turn right.

(16) At the Ru du Buis, near the tall fir trees, turn right into the woods. Walk uphill alongside the fence and continue to the Charmoi farm, headquarters of the “Lucius” Maquis in 1944.

(17) Carry on straight ahead, passing a few buildings on your right, until you reach a T-junction.

(18) Carry on straight ahead, turn left onto Rue du Champ Gras before crossing the River Tille, and emerge onto Rue de Vesvrotte (D19k).

(19) Continue to the right. At the junction by the banks of the Tille, turn right onto Rue de Travot to reach the car park (S/E).

A fairly long but accessible route. Visit several beautiful villages such as SALIVES. A beautiful view of the castle of LE MEIX. A beautiful and varied hike, with woods, fields, villages and rivers. The town hall and wash house of LE MEIX are ideal for a break, where you will see dozens of swallows.

A really lovely walk. The ramparts at Salives are charming, as are the villages along this route.
We didn’t encounter any difficulties on this route.
I’d definitely recommend it!

A very lovely walk described as difficult, which we found to be of moderate difficulty. I’d say it’s challenging because of its length – there’s a steep climb between Le Meix and Salive, but it’s manageable nonetheless. The last 3 kilometres are very long and rather tedious as they’re all along the road; perhaps there’s a way to take a shortcut through the fields (something to look into as soon as we have the time). A bit of everything in terms of scenery: woodland, a fountain, springs, a lovely visit to the ramparts in Salive, and the wash house. All in all, a lovely walk, though in hot weather, walking across the fields can be a bit of a slog.
