Circular route from the Signal de Saint-André starting from La Brosse

A family walk with a steady climb to the summit of the Monts du Lyonnais and beautiful scenery all along the way. Very little tarmac, forest paths and, of course, the impressive view from the Signal de Saint-André footbridge.

Description of the walk

Park towards the end of the Chemin du Moulin Bernard in the commune of Saint-Martin-en-Haut, for example along the wall of the property adjacent to the start of the path heading east towards Montfroide.

(S/E) Turn left, south-east, onto theGRP® des Monts du Lyonnais, marked in red and yellow. Walk down this stony path, then cross the small river, the Rieu. You will then reach the Black Cross crossroads.

(1) Turn left, eastwards, onto the uphill path, still following the GRP®. Continue until you reach the Sapin farm.

(2) Cross the D113 with care and take the small road opposite, slightly to the left, up a short but fairly steep slope. Continue along theGRP® to the next junction (a small covered path) and, at the Croix des Flaches junction, continue up the fairly steep slope between two fields, until you reach the fork that leads into the forest on the left.

(3) Continue left on theGRP®, through the forest, to reach, after a few hundred metres of gentler climbing, the Signal de Saint-André viewpoint, in an area equipped for picnics (with bins and toilets).

(4) Stay on theGRP® which descends very steeply (take care), then, immediately after the barrier, turn right and head towards the D113.
Take this road to the left (heading east), and after a few dozen metres, take the small tarmac road that descends south-west at the corner of a house. Follow it to a bend that descends quite steeply.

(5) Do not continue down this tarmac road but take the dirt track opposite and follow it along the hillside (lovely views to the left), then take the descent at the first junction and join another at the 810m mark.

(6) Turn right onto the path that runs alongside a flat field. Go round the small pond and, at the farm, take the tarmac road that climbs quite steeply, and follow it until you reach a flat bend.

(7) Go past the bend completely, then take the path leading down to the left.
Warning: just 30 m before this bend, the other path on the left – which is unmarked and not shown on IGN maps – is the wrong one; it can add a good half-hour detour at the end.
Continue at a leisurely pace until you reach the Black Cross junction, which you passed on the way there.

(1) Follow the route back in the opposite direction to return to the Chemin du Moulin Bernard (S/E).

A great walk, relatively easy and very pleasant. You walk through fields and undergrowth, arriving halfway at a splendid viewpoint overlooking the valley. We even had the treat of a sea of clouds and Mont Blanc lit up in the distance!
If you want to start the circular from the car park at the Saint André viewpoint, that's also possible.

The car park isn't very convenient; I parked at the edge of a field.
However, there is a large car park between points 4 and 5 (Lat 45.635 / Long 4.590).
The view is superb (point 4)
