Description of the walk

Park at Place du Jeune Lié, in the village of Fontivillié.

(S/E) Head towards the D737, which you must cross with care to reach Queue d’Ageasse at a multi-way junction.

(1) Cross the junction, continue straight ahead for 300 m, then take the path on the left towards the Route de La Croix until you reach the village of Sompt.

(2) Turn left, passing the ‘Salle du Temps Partagée’ and the Ida Grinspan School on your left, then turn right at a 90° angle to reach the Town Hall.

(3) Turn right, then, at the end of the road, turn left and head down to the Saint-Médard Chapel.

(4) Turn right just before the chapel, then carefully cross the D111. Cross the Somptueuse (marked ‘Le Dauphin’ on IGN maps).

(5) At the right-hand bend, ignore the footpaths and head right towards the Salle de la Barbette (there’s a spot for a picnic near the hall).

(6) 50 m past the hall, take the hairpin bend to the left onto the small path leading up towards Pied Chétif. Just before the hamlet, head back down and rejoin the route you took earlier, just before the bridge over the Somptueuse.

(5) Turn right onto the small path leading to the water-powered mill, the oak-tanning pit, the wash houses and the Source de la Sompteuse.

(7) Join the D111 and walk carefully alongside it for about a hundred metres on the right, then cross it to continue along the Chemin de la Forge, on the left.

(3) When you can see the town hall, turn right onto Rue des Vignes and go past the cul-de-sac of the same name.

(8) At the left-hand bend in the street, turn right onto the path leading to the magnificent Vasilourde valley and join the Route de la Pagerie.

(9) Follow this road to the right towards Les Chaumes and pass through the hamlet.

(10) Cross the D737 with care to reach the Bois Bergeronneau and then the Bois des Touches. 150 m after the tarmac road, turn left along the edge of the woods.

(11) Pass close to a chapel, then cross a road at Vieux Lié. Continue along the Voie Romaine, which crosses the Chemin des Romains, and arrive at a four-way junction (where the Grand Huit trails meet).

(12) Turn left, leaving the Voie Romaine; keep left at the three-way junction; cross the Chemin des Romains again and enter Jeune Lié via Rue des Tisserands, which joins Rue du Puits de la Barre; follow this road to the left towards Place du Jeune Lié (S/E).

A superb walk. The source of the Somptueuse and La Barbette are two magnificent spots.
A very shaded route.
The highlight on 24 June: sampling cherries along much of the walk.
An absolute must-do.
