Circular tour of the Chartrousette and Billon huts

La Chartreuse is full of haberts, large alpine huts where shepherds live in summer whilst the flocks graze there. This circular route takes you past two of them: Chartrousette and Le Billon.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park at the hamlet known as Le Pont des Allemands, in the hairpin bend before La Correrie.

(S/E) Start by crossing the road and taking the wide track on the left. Begin a steep climb. Gradually, the track narrows to give way to a good path. Make a wide circular loop to the right, cross a stream and then follow the edge of the fields to reach the Habert de Chartroussette.

(1) Continue by turning left onto the wide path, stay on this path to reach a wide track. Take it to the left, reaching a large, well-maintained clearing. Turn right into the meadow and then follow the wide path, first in open country then through the woods. Via a fairly steep climb, reach a clearly marked Y-junction.

(2) Turn right onto this wide path. Continue up a gentler slope, then along a virtually level path, finishing with a descent to reach the junction with the Col d’Arpison trail.

(3) Turn right onto this path, continue the descent, and reach the Habert du Billon.

(4) Go round it, return to the track leading to it and turn right. Stay on this track and, a few metres further on, turn left and take the Chemin du Pavé, marked in pale yellow. Continue the descent to rejoin the track leading to the Grande Chartreuse Monastery.

(5) Turn right onto this wide, well-maintained track and follow it to the monastery. Walk alongside it until you reach the Y-junction where the two roads meet.

(6) Take the right-hand road and complete the descent to return to the car park at a place called Le Pont des Allemands (S/E).

After the pleasant Chartrousette hill, you come to a wide path, then turn right. From there, the path is difficult, very muddy and extremely sticky. At first, you can avoid it by walking across the pasture, but after point 2 on the route, you just have to put up with it... At one point, my walking stick sank 30 cm into the mud! So I wouldn’t recommend this route when the ground is wet.
The main advantage is that you walk mostly in the shade when it’s very hot. The path is completely deserted.
Furthermore, there is little of interest between Chartrousette and the Habert de Billon; there are no views.
The guidebook and map are accurate. There are no signposts between Chartrousette and Billon.
I won’t be doing it again.

A lovely walk with varied scenery. Best avoided after rain as the climb gets very muddy.

OK, and thanks for that feedback. It’s true that in forests, paths and tracks are sometimes used by foresters. As for the Grande Chartreuse, my description only mentions that we walk alongside it (6), but it doesn’t say anywhere that it’s visible during the walk.

The path is difficult to follow, poorly maintained and rutted by heavy machinery. There are no signposts.
No view of the Grande Chartreuse monastery.
I do not recommend this hike

Parking at the Pont des Allemands or at La Correrie. Busy on the ascent from the monastery. Less busy on the descent from the Col de la Ruchère. Insufficient signposting on the descent: after Habert Billon there is nothing to indicate the path towards Chartrousette (you have to stay at the bottom of the valley on the right-hand side, and not follow the track, which I think leads back towards the monastery); fortunately, we were able to find our way using the ‘maps.me’ app, but then again, a hike with your phone in hand isn’t really the point.... The path has almost no tracks until you come to a track and a sheepfold, where you need to head down towards Chartrousette, which you reach from above. A very lovely walk in any case!

The start of the route was a bit muddy due to logging operations, but it was a very pleasant hike. We were lucky enough to spot a herd of chamois near Habert du Billon.
From Habert du Billon, we extended the circular route by climbing up to the Col de la Ruchère. Despite the extra distance, we completed the circular route in 4 hours and 10 minutes.

A very pleasant walk, with superb views (particularly at Habert du Billon, beneath the Petit Som and the Grand Som).
However, finding the right route wasn’t easy near Habert de Chartrousette, due to damage caused by logging machinery, nor at the Arpison crossroads because of lingering snow.
