Circular Bège ridges from Vicdessos

This hike is for experienced hikers who are comfortable using the app, as it takes place on unmarked roads and trails until the junction with the GR® Tour des Trois Seigneurs at the highest point of the Crêtes de Bège. The trails are old but still easily identifiable and easy to follow. However, you will need to be in good physical condition as there is a significant elevation gain over a relatively short distance. You will also need to be able to identify the best routes when you reach the rocky part of the ridge. From there, you will discover exceptional 360° panoramic views. The return journey, which is not particularly difficult, follows the GR® trail.

Description of the walk

Park in the Vicdessos town hall car park.

(S/E) With your back to the town hall, turn right towards Tarascon-sur-Ariège. Cross the bridge over the Ruisseau de Vicdessos and immediately turn right onto the D208.

(1) Turn right onto Chemin de la Bexanelle and arrive at Auzat. Continue straight ahead, cross the Ruisseau de Goulier and cross the bridge over the Ruisseau de Vicdessos at the hydroelectric power station. Walk along the cemetery and come out onto the Route des Pyrénées (D8).

(2) Turn right onto this road to descend towards Vicdessos, pass the cemetery on your left and reach the crossroads with the road leading to Saleix.

(3) Turn left to follow it and go back up to the entrance to the village.

(4) Turn onto the path, completely to the right, which starts at a crucifix and a bench. Join the junction with a discreet path.

(5) Head up to the left, following a series of fairly tight bends, to reach some antennas.

(6) Continue left on the track until you reach an area with beehives, then continue for about 20 metres.

(7) Find the start of a path climbing to the right (north-west) towards the ridges. Reach the bottom of the ridge line, which marks the start of the rocky section requiring some caution if wet (elevation 1195).

(8) Continue on the left and you will reach the junction with the GRP® Tour du Pic des Trois Seigneurs: yellow and red markings.

(9) Descend to the right until you reach the next trail junction.

(10) Turn right, keeping to the GRP®, which remains on the hillside in the Bois de Bège. Cross the Matché footbridge and you will immediately come out onto the D18.

(11) Follow it to the right, carefully, until you reach the EHPAD.

(12) Turn left onto Rue de la Chapelle, then left again onto Rue du Marronnier to stay at the top of the village. At the crossroads, continue left onto Route de la Vexane and you will come out onto Chemin de Mariotte. Turn left to reach the crossroads at Notre-Dame Church.

(13) Go down Rue de l'Église on the right, take Rue des Arcades on the right, then the street on the left to reach Rue Palamon. All that remains is to turn right to return to the town hall car park (S/E).
