Description of the walk

Park in the small shaded square (Place des Platanes) in front of the town hall in Marcilhac-sur-Célé.

(S/E) Walk back up towards the town hall and, crossing Rue des Remparts, take the small street opposite you, slightly to the left. Cross Route de Compostelle and take the small street that goes up opposite you, slightly to the left. Join Rue des Bolets.

(1) Turn right onto this street (GR®651® ) and follow it for about 1 km to reach Route des Pailhès after a few sharp bends.

(2) Turn right and follow this road for about 350 m. You have now left theGR®651. Pass the Pailhès chapel on your left.

(3) Turn left at the three-way junction, following the yellow markings (ENS des Caselles de Marcilhac route maintained by the Lot Departmental Council) and continue to the next intersection.

(4) Turn onto the first road on the right marked in yellow and follow it. After passing some buildings on the right, it turns into a small shaded path lined with low walls on either side, leading to a road.

(5) Turn right and continue for about 200 metres to admire a superb renovated cazelle on the left, topped with an astonishing wrought iron sculpture.

(6) Turn around.

(5) Follow the road for about 1.3 km until you reach the RD17, where you will find a calvary.

(7) Turn left until you reach a three-way junction about 300 m away, at the D17 - D14 crossroads.

(8) Follow theGR®651on the left along a path that gradually widens into a track lined with stone walls for about 1 km. You will come to a fork.

(9) Turn left onto a beautiful wide white stone track that descends to a small tarmaced local road (taken previously).
Do not take this small road, but turn immediately right onto the path that climbs almost parallel to the track you have just left. Notice a dolmen at the end of the meadow on the left. Follow this path until you reach the stony track and continue left to join a small tarmac road (Chemin des Combes Hautes).

(10) Turn left and follow theGR®651, which will quickly take you off this small tarmac road. At a sharp left-hand bend, take a path on your right and follow it for 550 m.

(11) At this point, on the left of this path, a small detour allows you to walk between several sheep pens and enclosures. When you come out of this detour after rejoining the main path, take the path on the right marked in yellow (ENS des Caselles de Marcilhac route marked by the Lot CD). You will then leave theGR®651.
Follow the path to reach a road, which you will follow straight ahead for about 150 metres.

(12) At the crossroads with two carriageways leading from private properties, near a recently built calvary, take the path on the left (GR®651) which descends steeply into the Célé valley and takes you to Marcilhac-sur-Célé. All along this path, you will enjoy wide views of the Célé valley and the limestone cliffs that mark its boundaries.
Once you reach the village, follow the streets downhill as directly as possible to reach the banks of the Célé.

(13) Take the time to visit the abbey and its Romanesque church and enjoy the tranquillity of the banks of the Célé. Walk along the Célé upstream to reach the Place des Platanes (S/E).

Route created using the Visorando app for hassle-free route tracking.
A pleasant walk. There are some lovely houses to see along the route. A lovely end to the walk.
The path from point 5 (crossroads) to point 9 is uninteresting (partly a road from the crossroads to point 8). I recommend taking a direct route from point 5 to point 9.
A visit to Marcilhac-sur-Célé Abbey is very interesting.

A hike like few others, with virtually no roads, pleasant Causse paths lined with countless caselles. This remarkable vernacular heritage is revealed throughout the route, much to the delight of hikers. End the day with a visit to the old abbey and a moment of relaxation by the Célé river – all elements that make this small village a must-see destination.

A route with beautiful farmhouses, very well maintained or renovated, which are worth a visit, but too much road and not enough small paths. A shame...
Marcilhac is also worth a visit.

A short drive leads to hamlets. It's not a bother, beautiful scenery, trails just the way we like them. A very pretty village.

__A very pleasant route. A great way to explore this part of Quercy, with its stone huts, low walls, cliffs, remains of the abbey vineyards, stunning views and flocks of sheep. Even though the walk only takes 2½ hours, it's a good idea to allow an hour to visit Marcillac, its abbey, the banks of the Célé river and the village centre, where the Rue des Bollets is not to be missed.
Thank you to jemebalade 33 Léognan for taking the time to provide information about this walk.
